MFSB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Assembled by the production team of Gamble and Huff, MFSB was the house band for their Philadelphia International Records label and provided the signature smooth Philadelphia sound for many acts including the O'Jays, The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and The Stylistics.
MFSB albums and singles were released for the rest of the decade, and their material later served as ample material for sampling by hip-hop musicians.
Another popular MFSB number, "Love Is The Message", has been a favorite of dance/disco DJ's since its release; countless remixes, both official and unofficial, exist of the song.

MFSB provided backing on a bevy of Philadelphia International hits, most prominently for the O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, as well as other Philly soulsters like the Stylistics and the Spinners.
The accompanying MFSB album, Love Is the Message, was a gold-selling Top Ten hit (and a number one R&B album); moreover, the title track became an underground hit on the New York disco scene several years later.
MFSB recorded five more albums for Philadelphia International over the remainder of the '70s, becoming a full-fledged disco group when they began working heavily with arranger/producer Dexter Wansel in 1978.

Earliest disco hit was single "Love is the message", which featured background vocals by the Three Degrees, who were at that time also signed to Philadelphia.
MFSB's biggest year was 1974 which yielded international early-disco hit "T.S.O.P. (The sound of Philadephia)", which became the eponymous theme for Philadelphia records.

MFSB didn't tour to support the record because the band's 30-member lineup was too large and also because the huge demand for Philly soul kept them in the recording studio and made Sigma Sound a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week operation.
MFSB did make a few appearances, including a mesmerizing performance for attendees of a CBS Records convention.
However, the revival was never intended to be permanent and the group went their separate ways again shortly after its release.

MFSB [+]'s debut album was more of a soul-funk mix than the kind of disco for which the band would become known with their "T.S.O.P." hit.
The group also made a fair instrumental workout of Sly Stone's "Family Affair" and put the flute in the lead for much of the arrangement of "Back Stabbers." It's pretty well-crafted instrumental soul that's not quite super-slick, though your attention might eventually wander if you're not using it as dance fodder.
The lush pop inclinations that would form part of the bed of their later work (both as MFSB [+] and backing numerous Philly soul artists) come more to the fore on some other tracks, particularly the grandiose "Poinciana," though even that breaks up the soaring violins with some tasty jazz-blues piano and guitar.

MFSB represents to me, one of those lost group of artist whose time has still not surcomb to the lower standards of current time.Artistic, talented and perfect the music brings you back to a time when style was having a piggy back ride with substance.
The break when the song goes from a mellow jazz composition to a "this is my part!!" get up and dance beat that is unforgettable.
While I agree that TSOP may have gotten more air play because of soul train, I truly believe more people recognize MFSB for their Love is the Message theme.
