  MG FF cannon Information
The MG FF was a drum-fed 20 mm aircraft cannon developed in 1936 by Oerlikon and license-produced in Germany.
The MG FF was designed for use at fixed or flexible mountings in Luftwaffe aircraft during World War II.
The MG FF and FF/M saw widespread use in fighters like Bf 109E, early Bf 109F, Bf 110 C to F and Fw 190A-2 to A-5 as well as in some bombers like Do 217, He 111 and many other aircraft.

 MG 151 cannon Information
It was 1941 developed into the 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon which was widely used on many types of German Luftwaffe fighters, fighter bombers, night fighters, ground attack and even bombers as part of or as their main armament during World War II.
The 15 mm weapon was found to have lackluster performance as the main gun on Messerschmitt Bf 109 early F-2 and F-3 series aircraft, and was soon replaced by the 20 mm version to become the standard cannon for the Bf 109F-4 series onwards until it was superseded by the 30 mm MK 108 cannon.
Compared to the earlier Oerlikon MG FF cannon, the MG 151 had a higher muzzle velocity which gave it a more predictable trajectory and higher impact velocity/longer range.

The WWII Fighter Gun Debate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
It was a derivative of the Oerlikon F cannon.
The MG FF/M version fired a smaller round with a higher muzzle velocity, but it was still a short-range weapon, and its ballistic characteristics were very different from those of the 7.92mm machineguns installed on the same fighters (mainly Bf 109E).
Examples of the second approach are the MG FF and MG 17 weapons of the Bf 109E, the two.50 and four.303 Brownings of the early P-51, or the two 20mm cannon and two 7.7mm guns in the A6M2.

The 13mm MG 131 bullet is about three times heavier than that of the 7.92mm, but can be fired at a similar muzzle velocity.
The main drawback of the MG FF was its ballistic performance.
Being very different from the 7.92mm MG 17 light machine guns installed on the same aircraft, the cumulative effect of concentrated fire was lost.

The first true prototype for the Bf 109 E series was the Bf 109 V14 which was powered by the 810 kW (1100 HP) Daimler Benz DB 601 A engine and was flown during the early summer of 1938.
The pre-production Bf 109 E-0 fighters appeared late in 1938, and both these and the initial Bf 109 E-1 fighters carried an armament of four MG 17 machine guns as the MG FF cannon was still considered to be inadequately developed for operational use.
This model reverted to the twin engine-mounted MG 17 machine guns and pair of MG FF cannons, but the latter were of an improved type.

The latter gun would eventually be supplanted by a 20 mm MG FF cannon which would endow the fighter with a longer-range armament than that of either its British contemporaries.
Three 7.9 mm MG 17 machune guns provided insufficient range and weight of fire, and several B-model airframes were fitted with a 20 mm MG FF cannon in place of the centrally-mounted MG 17.
The Bf 109 V8 was fitted with two wing-mounted MG 17 machine guns in addition to the two mounted in the engine cowling, although this aggraved the flutter problem until the ailerons were balanced and the wing leading edge stiffened.

While the V-14 was armed with the two MG 17 above the engine and one 20mm MG FF canon in each wing, the V-15 got the two MG 17 and one canon firing through the propeller axis.
The Bf 109 E-0 was identical to the V-14 except for the armament, as the E-0 had two additional MG 17 in the wings instead of the MG FF in the propeller shaft.
The early F versions were equipped with the MG FF/M cannon, the F-2 got the MG 151, and from F-4 on the MG 151/20 was used.

Admittedly the mix of cannon types was a bit odd -- all the more so because the two cannon used incompatible ammunition -- but the same odd combination would be used in the next subvariant, the A-3, and is well documented.
The cannon of the FW-190 also proved effective in attacks on ground targets, and the aircraft was rugged enough to take punishment as well as dish it out.
Each cannon fired a 45 millimeter armor-piercing round, fitted in a discarding sabot, out the bottom of the fin to punch through the thin top armor of a tank, while a counterweight was fired out the top to balance out recoil forces.

This began with the addition of two 7.9mm (0.311-in.) beam guns on the He 111H-2; other typical variations in armament included the provision of a 20mm (0.79-in.) MG FF cannon in the under-nose gondola of some H-3’s, for anti-shipping attacks.

The theory was that solid bullets or AP cannon shells relied on hitting the relatively small vital areas to have an effect, whereas an HE shell could cause serious damage regardless of where it struck.
The MG 131 was a 13 mm HMG intended to replace the RCMGs in both fixed and movable mountings, and therefore kept as small and light as possible, making it the least powerful HMG to see service.
The cannon's advantages are clearly shown in the decisions made as a result of combat experience by air forces with a choice of good HMGs and cannon.

The D-1 tried the three-gun armament again, with a 20 millimeter MG FF cannon firing through the prop spinner, but the cannon tended to jam and caused performance problems, and the D-2 went back to the four 7.9 millimeter guns of the C-1.
The E-3 went back to the engine-mounted MG FF cannon, but the same problems persisted, and the gun was often removed in the field.
Early Bf 109F variants were armed with two MG 17 7.9 millimeter machine guns in the cowling and one MG FF 20 millimeter cannon mounted on the engine and firing through the prop spinner.

One constant in all 109s (until the later G series) was the twin MG 17s in the cowling, synchronised to fire through the propeller disk – this held their rate of fire down to about 17 rps each.
The 60 round drums which fed the cannon ran out after less than seven seconds (and perhaps less than that, as it appears that only 55 rounds were often loaded, presumably in the interests of reliable feeding).
The low-velocity cannon were particularly difficult to hit with at long range, because of their curved trajectory and long flight time.

Though faster than anything in the sky and sporting a lethal four 30mm MK 108 cannon, the Schwalbe ("Swallow") was highly vulnerable during take-off and landing, and the jet engines rarely lasted more than 12 hours of flight.
It was generally under-gunned compared to the "a" variants (often only two MG131 and two MG151 machine guns, compared to four 20mm cannon), though the higher air attack value in-game suggests the designers may have intended this to be the "d-12", which had a centreline 30mm MK 108 cannon.
The standard M version was armed with one 20mm cannon and two 12.7mm machine guns, all concentrated in the nose of the airplane (pilots had complained bitterly about the absence of one of the machine guns in early variants of the Yak-9).

Some of the aircraft had the cannons removed and cameras installed, and with less than fifty aircraft built, most were to be converted to training duties as Daimler-Benz had promised availability of the new DB601 engine for late 1938.
