  The Original MGTD Midget
While the MG Car Company created a simple little sports car, it was really the aftermarket industry and enthusiasts surrounding it, that made the TD, and even the sports car craze, what it is today.
Also during this time I contributed many technical articles to the Vintage MG Club of Southern California (VMG) newsletter and was their technical editor for a period of time.
We stopped at the MG factory but were not allowed in due to the fact that it had received bomb threats that week as they were shutting down production.

  Test Drive Notes: Tommy's 1952 MG TD
The engine in the '52 MG TD has 52 horsepower — which, it turns out, is just enough power to make it go fast enough to scare the living daylights out of you.
The handling of the MG is marvelous — as long as you're not moving.
On the upside, the MG does have rack and pinion steering, which for its time was a superb offering — and was a big improvement over the reins and stirrups that were in use a few years earlier.

MG is a British sports car manufacturer founded in 1924, although no cars have been made since MG Rover went bankrupt in the spring of 2005.
MG got its name from "Morris Garages", a dealer of Morris cars in Oxford which began producing its own customized versions to the designs of Cecil Kimber who had joined the company as its Sales Manager in 1921 and was promoted to General Manager in 1922.
MG was absorbed into the British Motor Corporation in 1952, and latterly British Leyland in 1968.

The Motto bodied MG was the idea of Dave Ash, a prominent MG racer in the early 50s and Inskip Motors, the East Coast importer of T Series MGs.
This exquisite Rocco Motto bodied MG is one of 3 made and was designed to make the brick-like MG more competitive with the OSCA's and Porsche's in its class.
The MG TA Midget appeared in the spring of 1936 as a replacement for the MG PB.

MG TC Some historians might dispute this, but it seems that the prototype TB and TC were numbered 0251 and were not counted as production cars.
MG TD For the TD there is the slight complication of the TD Mark II; because this started off life as a competition version the chassis numbers were prefixed TDC.
MG TF In the case of the TF, after two prototypes, Abingdon had to use a BMC imposed numbering system starting at 501.

The MG TD was introduced in 1950 because the American market wanted a car that was bigger and more modern.
Although the car was slightly slower than the TC, it sold three times as many copies including about 1000 TD Mark 2 models which had a more powerful engine and a stiffer suspension.
MG designers brought the MGA prototype to BMC management only several days after Donald Healey had shown the Austin-Healey 100-4, a car that would directly compete with the new MG.

The TD now featured independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering, which combined improved the T-Series handling characteristics.
The TD body still retained the 30's style body design but now had pressed steel wheels and was available in LHD format for export customers.

The MG T series of cars (including the TA, TB, TC, TD, and TF) was a basic body-on-frame sports car produced from 1936 through to 1955.
The 1950 TD combined the TC's drivetrain but with modified hypoid geared rear axle with the MG Y-type chassis and a familiar T-type style body.
An independent suspension using coil springs in front was new, as were rack and pinion steering, smaller 15 inch disc type road wheels and a left-hand drive option.

Following the Morris Motors takeover of MG in 1935 the overhead-cam Midgets were swept aside in favour of the T-series of cars with push-rod engines.
Due to government restrictions most of these were designated for export and captured the hearts of the Americans, 10,000 being built before the more modern TD arrived in 1949.
However, they kept the MG family car going until the modern, rounded Z-Type was introduced in 1954.
