Performances with MG151/20 and Mk108 - Aircraft of World War II - Warbird Forums
Assuming the other stuff (belts etc.) roughly equal, the difference in overall weight is less than 20 kg/wing, that does not sound as something that could dramatically impact the performances.
I thought that the 'R2' was just the mk108 installation without additional armour, and 'R8' was mk108+extra protection, but reading your post it seems that extra armour was fitted in both.
Was then no variant with just the 108 in place of the mg151?

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: MG151
The A-4 series had this changed to 2x MG17 in the cowling, a MG151/20 (a development of the 15 mm MG151 to the 20mm caliber) at each wing root and a MGFF 20 mm gun in each wing.
The nose mounted Mg151 has 150 rounds which is pretty good, and being mounted directly infront of the pilot it tends to make aiming easier.
The 20mm Mg151 is not great at distance like the hispanos though so anything over about D550 is a fairly difficult shot against any sort of maneuvering target.

 The WWII Fighter Gun Debate
It was used in German fighters until the end of the war, because --- despite rumours suggesting otherwise --- it was not possible to install the MG151 in the engine cowling of small fighters such as the Bf 109 or Fw 190.
In 1943 a few thousand guns based on the MG151 were manufactured in the USA, redesigned to fire a very powerful 0.6 inch (15.2 x 114, 76.5g) round.
From the end of 1940 onwards the MG FF was replaced by the excellent Mauser MG 151/20 cannon, derived from the 15mm MG151.

 Bf109F-4
I just think that it is the best combination of characteristics for the 109 series, many of which changed not necessarily for the better in later versions.
Putting the guns in the nose made them much easier to aim and the upgrade to the Mg151 from the MGFF gave better ballistics.
The cannon is effective so you don't want to give him close-range snapshots or any sort of tracking shot if you can help it because no planes in AH can really stand up to 20mm hits for long.

 Do335
The Do335 V5 (CP+UE) was the armament test prototype, fitted with a 30 mm engine mounted MK103 cannon, and two 15 mm MG151 cannon mounted in the upper nose.
The Do335 V13 (RP+UA) was the prototype of the Do335B-1 which featured a revised nose undercarriage arrangement - the larger wheel being tilted at 45 degrees when fully retracted, a V-shaped armoured windscreen and DB603E engines.
It's weapons bay was replaced by an additional fuel tank, and the two 15 mm MG151 cannon in the nose replaced by 20 mm MG151s.

Aces High BB - Mauser Cannons?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
I keep running across refernces to them being used on the later versions of the IAR fighters, but it never says Mg151 of MGFF- just "20mm Mauser-type cannons".
I would assume that a 1944-45 aircraft would use an Mg151, but there is still some debate.

Ho103 removed and 20mm MG151 installed with 120 rounds per gun.

Tamiya 1/48 FW-190A-8/R2, previewed by Tom Cleaver
The Fw-190A-8/R2, known as the “Sturmbock,” was built by Fieseler, and differed from the standard Fw-190A-8 in having outboard wing armament changed from an 20mm MG151 cannon to a 30mm MK 103 cannon, and was also fitted with additional armor to increase the chance of penetrating defensive machine gun screen of the bomber formations.
Being considerably heavier than the standard Fw-190A-8, the “Sturmbock” was not really capable of fighter-versus-fighter combat, and when formations were caught by the American escort fighters before they could attack the bombers, they generally suffered heavy losses; some outstanding pilots flying in these units did manage to score against P-51s, but they were the exception.
New are sprues with the lower armament plates for the 30 mm MG108 and 20mm MG151 cannon carried by both this heavy fighter and the standard A-8, as well as the wider prop used by some A-8/R2s.

MDC MG151 with turned brass barrels
MDC has released a set of replacement MG151 20mm Cannons that can be used as a direct replacement for any Luftwaffe aircraft that used the MG151 which includes the Bf106 G-6 as well as all variants of the Focke Wulf Fw190.
However displaying them INSIDE a model will probably only be do-able in the wingroot positions of the Fw190 series.
There is a locator pin in the back end of the barrel that insures a tight fit and clean line up of the barrel to the gun body.

Contrary to what has been written in many books, the armament is not a difference point according to the Manuals, MG151 or MG151/20 could be found in either the F-2 or F-4 and does imply a change in designation.
The F-1/F-3 were originaly equiped with the MG/FF-M motor canon, and the F-2/F-4 with the MG151 in either 15mm or 20mm caliber.
The armament manual is quite clear about it, as mounting of a 15 or 20mm MG151 is detailled for BOTH DB601N and DB601E.
