 MGM Mirage Slumps
MGM Mirage President and Chief Financial Jim Murren said he was disappointed because analysts focused on just one aspect of the company's quarter and not the entire picture.
MGM Mirage reported a 71.3 percent increase in revenue, from $1.15 billion a year ago to $1.97 billion in the quarter ended Sept. 30 -- mainly from the Mandalay properties the company purchased in April.
Still, MGM Mirage was hurt by the closure of the Beau Rivage, which reported operating income of $5 million during the two months it was open, a decrease of 72 percent from the $18 million reported a year ago.

MGM Mirage is the latest Las Vegas casino company to reach a tentative five-year contract with union negotiators, leaving nearly 80 percent of the city's unionized gaming work force with deals to ratify.
The MGM Mirage contract was reached at the close of a nearly 12-hour negotiating session at the company's Golden Nugget and, like the other deals, awaits the approval of the union members.
Union sources say MGM Mirage executives were reluctant to put in writing methods for dealing with the issue at the company's up-market Bellagio, which expects high levels of service from its employees.

Also today, MGM MIRAGE reported a 32 percent drop in profit during the third quarter partly attributed to a decline in the percentage of bets won from gamblers at the Bellagio.

MGM Mirage (MGG:NYSE - commentary - research) wants to be king of Las Vegas, but its coronation will not be cheap -- and it may not be easy, either.
MGM Mirage late Friday announced a $4.85 billion cash bid for Mandalay Resort Group (MBG:NYSE - commentary - research), which also calls for the assumption of $2.8 billion in debt, a merger that would create the largest gaming operator in the world -- and one with control of nearly half of Las Vegas' hotel rooms.
MGM Mirage will be issuing an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission at some point Monday, according to Goldman Sachs, which would force Mandalay to respond by Tuesday.
