MH-53 Pave Low - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MH-53J Pave Low III heavy-lift helicopter is the largest, most powerful and technologically advanced helicopter in the US Air Force inventory.
The MH-53J Pave Low's main mission is to drop off, supply, and pick up special forces who are behind enemy lines.
The Pave Low's mission is low-level, long-range, undetected penetration into denied areas, day or night, in adverse weather, for infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces.

Pippin, a 22-year veteran, stands in front of an MH-53 -- the Pave Low helicopter that has operated in the United States military since the Vietnam War.
The typical Pave Low helicopter dates back to the Nixon administration; the agency's workhorse C-130 aircraft often are older than the people who maintain them.
In 2004, a new craft, the CV-22 Osprey, is scheduled to begin phasing out Special Ops' fleet of aged Pave Lows over a three-year period, Bailey said.

The decision to upgrade the USAF's H-53 fleet (including seven CH-53Cs) to MH-53J Enhanced Pave Low III standard was partly the result of poor performance by Navy RH-53D helicopters during the attempted rescue of American hostages in Iran in April 1980 and by less than full satisfaction with the HH-53H version.
The USAF operates the TH-53A for type training and the MH-53J Enhanced Pave Low III version for special operations and combat rescue.

United States Helicopter Crew: Killed In Afghanistan, 23 November 2003
Now, the widows of three of the men are suing defense contractors for the wrongful deaths of their husbands in the 2003 crash, which the Air Force blamed on engine failure of the MH-53M Pave Low helicopter caused in part by failure of auxiliary fuel tanks to jettison.
Sikorsky, a unit of defense contractor United Technologies Corp., denies that its aircraft or maintenance schedules were to blame, saying that the Pave Low and its operation "met the standards of the state-of-the-art, scientific knowledge" and that no red flags had been raised about any defects in the fuel tanks.
A compressor problem caused one of the two engines on the Pave Low to stall, leaving it with one engine operating and far too much weight to carry in the thin mountain air.
