  Pilot's poor punctuation inspired war code
These were known by MI9 as "dotty" codes, not because they were in any way ridiculous but because like Flt Sgt Hall's they frequently used dots or punctuation in the letter to show where the message began and ended.
But this was clearly not an efficient system and MI9 devised "Amy", a book code using a pocket German-English dictionary in which the page and line numbers were used to pick out the words of the messages.
As MI9 became more organised and the flow of intelligence increased, escape lines were set up such as those depicted in the BBC television series Secret Army.

MI9 had five functions: 1) facilitate escapes, 2) facilitate the return of escapers and evaders to England, 3) collect and distribute information about escape and evasion, 4) deny such information to the Enemy, and 5) maintain the morale of British prisoners of war.
Hutton was hired by the War Office to create the escape gear necessary for Britons to escape to fight another day.
Field Marshall Sir Gerald Templar, King’s Guards, said, “it is at best difficult and at worst impossible to escape and evade without a map, and it was this simple fact that caused Hutton to turn his attention initially to maps, the escapers most important accessory.”
