Musical Instrument Digital Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MIDI Show Control (MSC) protocol (in the Real Time System Exclusive subset) is an industry standard ratified by the MIDI Manufacturers Association in 1991 which allows all types of media control devices to talk with each other and with computers to perform show control functions in live and canned entertainment applications.
MIDI is almost directly responsible for bringing an end to the "wall of synthesizers" phenomenon in 1970s-80s rock music concerts, when musical keyboard performers were sometimes hidden behind banks of various instruments.
MIDI messages are extremely compact, due to the low bandwidth of the connection, and the need for near real-time accuracy.

MIDI is also used to provide game music in some video games.
When a MIDI instrument is capable of producing several independent sounds simultaneously (a multitimbral instrument), MIDI channels are used to address these sections independently.
In most but not all sequencers, each track is assigned to a specific MIDI channel and/or a specific General MIDI instrument patch.

show control - a Whatis.com definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Show control is a computer system, especially in the entertainment industry, that combines disparate hardware and software-controlled lighting, sound, and visual effects into a single, synchronized system.
Show control is used for theater productions, rock concerts, multimedia presentations, outdoor spectacles, and similar events.
A show control system may combine a number of technologies and standards such as DMX512, MediaLink, MIDI, MIDI Show Control, and various SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) standards.

 MIDI Show Control (MSC) 1.0
When a Show Control message with an ID of 127 is sent along the MIDI bus, all controllers should respond to this message if appropriate (ie, if they support the particular command_format and command of that message), regardless of their group or individual ID numbers.
Note that MIDI Show Control allows manufacturers the option to use certain command values for their own proprietary purposes, and therefore information about the data bytes for such proprietary commands will have to be obtained from those manufacturers.
MIDI Show Control does not specify an absolute minimum set of commands and data which must be implemented in each device responding to a given command_format.

When a show file is opened, if a setup cue is present, all of the device settings except default show will be set to their default values, then the setup cue is run.
After the show is opened, the cue lists in the show are scanned in order, and all cue lists having the "Open List when Show Opened" flag set are automatically opened (up to the maximum number of open lists), and the first cue path in each cue list is opened.

Equipment: Show Me the Show Control
Show control is all about integrating diverse and disparate control systems: lighting, sound, scenery automation, video, pyro, and so forth, so that effects and events can be synchronized reliably and repeatedly and, needless to say, safely.
Show control controls control systems, not lights, not sound, not pyro, and certainly not multi-ton pieces of moving metal or explosives.
A mistake, and one John has seen done, is using show control to do something that human operators are better at anyway, like sensing the day to day, or minute to minute variations that make live performance, well, live.

In essence, MIDI Show Control is intended to communicate easily with devices which are designed to execute the same set or similar sets of operations.
Optionally, Controlled Devices may be able to transmit (from a MIDI Out connector) MIDI Show Control commands of the type required by themselves to produce a desired result.
Controllers, of course, should normally be able to create and send commands in all command_formats, otherwise their usefulness will be limited.

MIDI Machine Control (MMC) is a protocol specifically designed to remotely control hard disk recording systems, and other machines used for record or playback, over a MIDI cable.
Of course, even the master controller which is being used to control the entire MIDI Machine Control network can have its own, unique ID, in case slaved controllers wish to create and send messages back to the master.
When a MIDI Machine Control message with an ID of 127 is sent along the MIDI bus, all devices should respond to this message if appropriate (ie, if they support the particular command of that message), regardless of their individual ID numbers.
