MIL-STD-1553 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MIL-STD-1553 is referred to as "1553" with the appropriate revision letter (A or B) as a suffix.
MIL-STD-1553, "Aircraft Internal Time-Division Command/Response Multiplex Data Bus," has been in use since 1973 and is widely applied.
The basic difference between the 1553A and the 1553B is that in the 1553B, the options are defined rather than being left for the user to define as required.

 MIL-STD-1553 LAN
The maximum length of a 1553 LAN is also not explicitly stated, although it can be computed once the wire gauge and associated signal propagation delay are established [MilesTek].
Although 1553 does not explicitly define layers to the standard, elements of it can be divided into those relating to the physical implementation in hardware (cabling, voltages, etc.) and to the elements that are usually related to the software-hardware interaction (the data link layer).
1773 is essentially identical to 1553, except that terms such as "positive" and "negative" voltage levels described in the 1553 standard are replaced by the terms "on" and "off".

 MIL-STD-1553 Testing
In all three test scenarios, a single-function 1553 board, usually acting as a BC (assuming that the UUT is an RT), is sufficient.
In other test applications, it is necessary either to verify the 1553 interface circuitry in the avionics hardware under test or to confirm its capability to handle erroneous bus traffic.
But the problem was and still is that one vendor’s 1553 interfaces might have been developed for one type of application, such as system simulation, while another company’s products were developed for a different application.

MIL-STD-1553—Why speed isn’t everything. Products by SBS.
There are several reasons for this, including the fact that the 1553 bus protocol designates a single bus controller which dictates to all the remote terminals when to send, when to listen; who sends first, who sends next, and so on.
But there are at least two very good reasons why it’s alive and kicking some 30 years later: First, the cost of replacing 1553 wiring on existing systems would be astronomical; and Second, there’s not a good replacement for 1553 that can offer the same reliability levels.
We produce the rugged cards, boards and systems that are making supporting 1553 in the next generation of land, sea and air platforms.

ARINC429, ARINC 429 to MIL-STD-1553 DATA TRANSLATOR PROTOCOL CONVERTER. ARINC429 to 1553 CONVERTER
The 1553 interface on this converter is configured as a single channel, single redundant Bus Controller (BC), but it could equally be configured as a dual redundant Remote Terminal (RT).
The 1553 data must also be specified - in particular the RT Address, Sub-Address, message type (BT to RT, RT to BC, RT to RT, etc.) and message length.
A watchdog circuit is incorporated into the design and this is responsible for checking that the transmission of the 1553 continues under all conditions.
