XHTML Media Types   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
While [MIME] specifies "The default character set, which must be assumed in the absence of a charset parameter, is US-ASCII." [HTTP] Section 3.7.1, defines that "media subtypes of the 'text' type are defined to have a default charset value of 'ISO-8859-1'".
The 'application/xml' media type [RFC3023] is a generic media type for XML documents, and the definition of 'application/xml' does not preclude serving XHTML documents as that media type.
The 'text/xml' media type [RFC3023] is an another generic media type for XML documents, and the definition of 'text/xml' does not preclude serving XHTML documents as that media type, either.

MIME - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MIME is specified in five RFCs ;: RFC 2045, RFC 2046, RFC 2047, RFC 2048 and RFC 2077.
MIME is also a fundamental component of communication protocols such as HTTP, which requires that data be transmitted in the context of e-mail-like messages, even though the data may not actually be e-mail.
Through the use of the multipart type, MIME allows messages to have parts arranged in a tree structure where the leaf nodes are any non-multipart content type and the non-leaf nodes are any of a variety of multipart types.

 Appendix B
MIME is also used on the Web to define the type of a piece of data (e.g., text/html), and to send complex multipart messages (messages with multiple parts) via HTTP.
MIME defines several document headers, placed inside the document, that specify such things as the nature of a message (multipart or single part), how the message parts are separated, the data content of each part, and the encoding scheme used to encode each part.
Thus, when the server administrator defines a new type of data on a server, for example Kodak Photo-CD images, he or she must define an extension to use for such files (e.g.,.pcd) and configure the server to associate the MIME type (e.g., image/x-photo-cd) with this extension.

Juicy Studio: MIME Types and Content Negotiation
MIME is an extension of the e-mail protocol, to allow other types of data to be exchanged over the Internet, such as video, images, and applications.
A value of 1 indicates the MIME type is understood perfectly, and a value of 0 indicates the MIME type isn't understood at all.
MIME type contains a quality parameter of 0.2, is to indicate that PNG is preferred over GIF if the server is using content negotiation to deliver either a PNG or a GIF to user agents.

MIME Type Detection in Internet Explorer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A MIME type that is neither known nor ambiguous is termed unknown.
If no positive match is obtained during the data scan, and the server-provided MIME type is ambiguous or the server-provided MIME type is known, and the data format agreement test in the previous step failed, an attempt is made to parse a file extension from the file name passed in.
This MIME type was already scanned for (application/x-msdownload is a known MIME type), was not found, and is therefore the wrong determination (this results in a file download as opposed to the desired behavior, which is to display the text in-pane).

 Properly Configuring Server MIME Types
As new content types are invented or added to web servers, web administrators may fail to add the new MIME types to their web server's configuration.
MIME types describe the media type of content either in email or served by web servers or web applications and are intended to help guide a web browser in how the content is to be processed and displayed.
MIME type guessing has led to security exploits in Internet Explorer which were based upon a malicious author incorrectly reporting a MIME type of a dangerous file as a safe type.

Serving XHTML with the Right MIME Type588 - The Web Standards Project
MIME has its origins as an extension to email and is reused by HTTP as a means to declare the type of content (or media type) being served.
The MIME type indicates to the user-agent (as it receives the document) how to handle and treat it accordingly, thereby allowing you to associate a particular application or behavior to the particular media type in your browser.
The second technique caters for existing browsers while keeping the new MIME type for those which are able to understand it; the down side is that it can be quite tricky to implement on your server, depending on how much access you have to its configurations and settings.

MIME's Content-Type header field and media type mechanism has been carefully designed to be extensible, and it is expected that the set of media type/subtype pairs and their associated parameters will grow significantly over time.
MIME mail servers must use the same Content-ID field on the returned message that was used in the original "message/external-body" entities, to facilitate such matching.
Like the "message/partial" type, the "message/external-body" media type is intended to be transparent, that is, to convey the data type in the external body rather than to convey a message with a body of that type.

MIME types are using to distinguish what sort of operations and attributes a file has.
Besides the MIME types, in GNOME, the metadata system is used to provide information in a per-file basis (for example, to override the defaults of the mime-type).
These are used within the system to associate actions, icons, and various operations to MIME types, and by extension to the files on the system

 What is a MIME type?
MIME types form a standard way of classifying file types on the Internet.
Internet programs such as Web servers and browsers all have a list of MIME types, so that they can transfer files of the same type in the same way, no matter what operating system they are working in.
Although there is a complete list of MIME types, it does not list the extensions associated with the files, nor a description of the file type.

Character Set The term "character set" is used in MIME to refer to a method of converting a sequence of octets into a sequence of characters.

 MIME::Lite - low-calorie MIME generator - search.cpan.org
The MIME attributes and data (but not the other headers) are cut from the "self" message, and pasted into "part 0".
The default is taken from the Type; generally it is "binary" (no encoding) for text/*, message/*, and multipart/*, and "base64"; for everything else.
Important: the MIME attributes are stored and manipulated separately from the message header fields; when it comes time to print the header out, any explicitly-given header fields override the ones that would be created from the MIME attributes.

Internet media type - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
originally called a MIME type after MIME and sometimes a Content-type after the name of a header in several protocols whose value is such a type, is a two-part identifier for file formats on the Internet.
A media type is composed of at least two parts: a type, a subtype, and one or more optional parameters.
This is thought of as the "default" media type used by several operating systems, often used to identify executable files, files of unknown type, or files that should be downloaded in protocols that do not provide a separate "content disposition" header.

HTML 4 should be sent with the “text/html” mime type and must not be sent with the “application/xhtml+xml” mime type.
We first check if there is a Q value for the “application/xhtml+xml” mime type, and if there is, we compare it to the Q value for the “text/html” mime type.
If “application/xhtml+xml” has the greater Q value, or the “application/xhtml+xml” mime type has no Q value given, then the mime type to be used will be “application/xhtml+xml”.

It is not required that vendor mime types provide any syntax specification, but to its great credit ABC has one.

A Type 2 label MAY be used to block access to a URL before it has been fetched.
Since this is the highest priority in the hierarchy, once a Type 3 label is available, no further processing is necessary to identify the correct label to use for this resource.
The priority given to Type 3 labels is the crucial step that allows a content provider to work with the notion of a default label with local overrides.

Incorrect MIME Type for CSS Files
In some cases, Netscape 7.x and Mozilla ignore the CSS file because of its wrong MIME type and use a default style sheet that causes the layout to be different from what was intended by the web developer.

Mozilla and Netscape 7.x, when used in "strict mode" will follow the specification closely and expect the CSS file to be served with a correct MIME type ("Strict mode" is enabled by having a strict DTD mentioned in the first line of the HTML page).

It is suggested that XHTML delivered as text/html is broken and XHTML delivered as text/xml is risky, so authors intending their work for public consumption should stick to HTML 4.01, and authors who wish to use XHTML should deliver their markup as application/xhtml+xml.

If an attacker created an HTML e-mail containing an executable attachment, then modified the MIME header information to specify that the attachment was one of the unusual MIME types that IE handles incorrectly, IE would launch the attachment automatically when it rendered the e-mail.
The flaw, however, enables this safeguard to be circumvented by specifying an incorrect MIME type in the e-mail.
