 CD Baby: THOMAS BARQUEE: Missa
Missa (mass in Latin) is an experience of world church.
Barquee, who sees himself as both a composer and vocalist, wanted Missa to be a fuller integration of vocals and music than Temple, a more explicit blending of sacred text with crossover composition.
In composing Missa, Barquee took advantage of the breadth and depth of his spiritual practice and experience.

The medieval commentators were much exercised to explain the meaning of the strange expression.
When the choir has answered, the deacon turns round and, with hands joined, sings Ite missa est to its proper tone, the choir answering Deo gratias to the same notes.
In figured masses the Ite missa est should be sung to the tone of the plain-song mass provided for the occasion.

 Mister Missa
The "Missa Solemnis" is one of only a handful of religious works written by Beethoven.
While the work is a setting of the Latin mass, it is so intensely personalized by the composer that it seems far removed from the institutional rituals of the church.
The celebrated humanism and pantheism of Beethoven is elevated to sublime heights in the "Missa Solemnis." Composed in the last decade of Beethoven’s life, when he was completely deaf, it is full of astonishing musical innovations, especially in the strange and beautiful harmonic transpositions which seem designed to push the music into other worlds.

BBC - Proms - About Music: Joseph Haydn, Missa in angustiis, ‘Nelson Mass’   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
And in his principal remaining duty for the Esterházys — the unpromising one of composing a Mass to mark the nameday each September of the Prince’s wife — he found a new vehicle for his boundless creative energy and, between 1796 and 1802, produced six sacred masterpieces of truly symphonic breadth.
The Missa in angustiis is the third of these six Masses, composed just after The Creation in July and August 1798.
Haydn’s late Masses have sometimes been criticised for their supposed frivolity, yet in the wide-ranging contrasts of the Missa in angustiis there could be no truer demonstration not only of this unassuming sexagenarian’s deep and abiding faith, but also of his grateful awareness of his own talents.

While writing "Missa Mysteriorum" (Mass of the Mysteries), my thought was to combine my experience as a church musician with my experience as a composer of postmodern contemporary art music.
The result reveals traditional sounding melodies that are often accompanied by instrumental textures formed through the polyphonic layering of several rhythmic motives and the occasional use of minimalist techniques.
The word “missa” is the Latin word for "dismissal.” It is an excellent summary term for a worship form whose primary purpose is to send Christian believers into the world prepared to re-enact in their lives the patterns of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Heinrich Biber - Missa Bruxellensis. Prom pre-concert talk transcript, 2004.08.10
As far as the Missa Bruxellensis is concerned, however, the manuscript in Brussels wasn't written until after 1696 according to the watermark, so it couldn't possibly be an autograph by Benevoli who died over thirty years earlier in 1672 in Rome.
Hintermaier proposed that the Missa Salisburgensis was written for the celebrations in Salzburg in 1682 marking the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the archdiocese of Salzburg, which is very plausible.
The Missa Bruxellensis only survives in score format, but it is possible to get some idea about the number of instrumentalists and singers who might have been used in a performance in Salzburg Cathedral by looking at the manuscript parts for Biber's other vocal works which survive.

When used without qualification, the name usually refers to the 1823 setting by Ludwig van Beethoven (see Missa Solemnis (Beethoven)), but there are several other works known by the title:

Compositional History of the Missa Solemnis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
According to sketches and letters, Beethoven began his preliminary work on the Missa Solemnis in the beginning of 1819.
This seems contradictory to the date of the announcement of the Archduke elevation to cardinal and then Archbishop, but scholars attest that it is highly probable that news of the approaching appointment was known months ahead of the official notification.
Perhaps this accounts for a significant change of style; the Kyrie and Gloria are written in the more classical style of "true church music", whereas the Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei have more dramatic elements which are not part of traditional religious music.

 beethoven - missa solemnis
