The MK 108 (German: Maschinenkanone - Machine Cannon) was an autocannon (30mm calibre) manufactured in Germany during World War II by Rheinmetall-Borsig for use in aircraft.
Testing verified that the cannon was well-suited to this role, requiring as little as five hits with high-explosive ammunition to bring down a heavy bomber such as a B-17 Flying Fortress or B-24 Liberator.
The MK 108 was quickly ordered into production and was installed in a variety of Luftwaffe fighter aircraft, including the Messerschmitt Bf 109, Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Heinkel He 219, Messerschmitt Me 163, and Messerschmitt Me 262.

 Rheinmetall-Borsig MK 108 30mm cannon Luft '46 entry
In many ways, the Rheinmetall-Borsig MK 108 30mm cannon was considered to be a masterpiece of weapons engineering, due to it's compact size, ease of manufacture and hitting power.
In short, the MK 108 was a blow-back operated, rear-seared, belt fed 30 mm cannon using electric ignition and was charged and triggered by simple compressed air.
There were two main types of ammunition for the MK 108 to use, a 30 mm high-explosive self-destroying tracer ("M-Shell" or "Mine-Shell") and a 30 mm incendiary shell.

The MK 108 was also fitted to night fighters in an unusual installation, called "Schräge Musik" (German: "Jazz Music", literally "slanting music").
In this configuration, the cannons were mounted in the fuselage, aiming upwards at an almost vertical angle.

This cannon was relatively lightweight, compact and proved to be an effective and reliable weapon.
The low muzzle velocity needed for this simple operation became the MK 108's main shortcoming, with the result that its projectile trajectory dropped considerably after a comparatively short range.
The cannon used specially-developed 30x90RB mm ammunition—30 mm calibre, 90 mm case length, rebated/reduced rim.

The MK 108 had a number of characteristics that limited its use to anti-bomber combat.

Many of the A-2s were fitted with an MG-FF 20 millimeter cannon, a copy of the Swiss Oerlikon design, in each wing outboard of the landing gear, for a powerful total armament of two machine guns and four cannon.
Armament was an MK-108 or MK-103 cannon firing through the prop spinner, along with two MG-151/20 cannon in the cowling and one in each wing root.
The idea was that the pilot would arm the system and then fly under a bomber, with the cannon triggered by the shadow of the bomber falling on the sensor.

The Machinekanone (MK) 108 gun was developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig between 1941 and 1942.
Its big advantages were: low weight, small dimensions (which made it ideal to build into existing planes), and 80 % of the weapon was made of pressed sheet metal which made it cheap and ideally suited for mass-production.
The Me 163B was armed with two MK 108 guns, mounted in the left and right wing root with 60 shells per gun.

The "Hs-132C" was to have still a still more powerful Heinkel HeS-011A-1 engine, twin 20 millimeter MG-151 cannon with 250 rounds each, and twin 30 millimeter MK-103 or MK-108 cannon with 60 rounds each, and could carry a 1,000 kilogram (2,200 pound) bomb if the aircraft was fitted with booster rockets for take-off.

The Mk 108, manufactured by Rheinmetall-Borsig, was one of the most feared weapons by Allied airmen.

Though faster than anything in the sky and sporting a lethal four 30mm MK 108 cannon, the Schwalbe ("Swallow") was highly vulnerable during take-off and landing, and the jet engines rarely lasted more than 12 hours of flight.
It was generally under-gunned compared to the "a" variants (often only two MG131 and two MG151 machine guns, compared to four 20mm cannon), though the higher air attack value in-game suggests the designers may have intended this to be the "d-12", which had a centreline 30mm MK 108 cannon.
The standard M version was armed with one 20mm cannon and two 12.7mm machine guns, all concentrated in the nose of the airplane (pilots had complained bitterly about the absence of one of the machine guns in early variants of the Yak-9).

The MK 103 gains an advantage because of its higher velocity, but loses most of it due to its lower rate of fire, then is finally eclipsed in efficiency because of its much greater weight.
However, it is also true that cannon shells did not always explode when they hit — the fuze could sometimes fail to function — in which case they were reliant solely on their kinetic damage.
Where it does have an effect, it is generally to boost the scores of high-capacity HE shells while reducing those of lower-velocity AP cannon shells, which is validated by the Luftwaffe's decision to focus on chemical rather than kinetic energy in developing their aircraft weapons.

German fighter armament options ranged from rifle-calibre light machine guns, to 30mm cannon, mostly configured as mixed arrays of cowl and wing mounted weapons.

One distinctive physical feature was the very short gun barrel of 23 inches or 58.4 Centimeters, which gave the MK 108 a low muzzle velocity.
