MLCAD (Mike's LEGO Computer Aided Design) is a powerful, yet easy to use virtual modeling program designed specifically for use with LEGO parts.
MLCAD is available for Windows and Linux (Mac users see Bricksmith or Mac Brick CAD), and includes support for English, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Czech, French, and Spanish.
MLCAD download and installation - Download the zipped file containing the latest version of MLCAD from this page and unzip it into the LDraw root directory (any place will do, but this is the recommended location).

This tutorial is based on MLCad 3.11, takes for granted that the program is running smoothly and that you are a little familiar with it.
Open the LDraw file Dumper.ldr in MLCad and zoom in 'til the rear of the dumper is well visible in the panes.
To take advantage of MLCad's behavior, which sets the rotation point of the first selected part as rotation point for the rest of the selection, you have to select the helper part first.

Ik moet zeggen dat MLCad nog wel redelijk vlot werkt met grotere modellen, m'n model is nu bijna 4000 onderdelen groot en staat toch redelijk snel op het scherm als ik de tekening pak waarin alle sub-models samengevoegd zijn tot 1 geheel...
Verder gebruikte MLCad het standaard LDraw bestandsformaat en LeoCad een eigen bestandsformaat.
Ik heb ondertussen wel MLCAD gedownload maar nog niet getest dus ik weet nog niet wat beter is.

An executable that converts a MLCAD file to a textfile is found here(200K).
It works by converting all polygons in the MLCAD file into triangle meshes, and then smooths normals in a manner that keeps sharp creases while smoothing what should be rounded.
This is a sample file rendered, after adding lights and backdrop, of the MLCAD file colors.ldr (500KB).

The Grabber Arm / MLCAD drawings were created and adapted by Toolman from the instructions provided by LEGO for building an RIS 1.5 grabber arm.

MLCAD - Lego CAD software available free from www.lm-software.com/mlcad/, installation could be easier, however MLCAD makes great use of the regularly updated LDraw parts library and MLCAD features some excellent model generators (wizards).
Working with MLCAD does take some patience to begin with as you become familiar with the working environment and part names.
A useful resource to compliment MLCAD is the Lego set inventory website, peeron.com.

So MLCAD, being a LEGO CAD program, is a program for designing LEGO models all with just a computer (yes, that means an infinite number of pieces).
I've worked with MLCAD enough to be able to whip out a simple model (100 pieces or so) in fifteen to twenty minutes.
I have downloeaded ldraw and MLCad sucsesfuly, but when I try to run MLCad, it pops p with the invalid path eror, but there isn't any "browes" button.

 Science Stuff: Books: LEGO Software Power Tools, With LDraw, MLCad, and LPub
Second-there is some new information in here, even for long time users of MLCad like me. LSynth is amazing--MLCad users will be very happy to be able to finally include all of those flexible elements into their model files.
I have a feeling this will be extremely useful in our competitions, as we plan on documenting our robots in this manner and giving our competitors in the competitions the plans for our robots AFTER we have defeated their robots *smile*, as well as posting them to our club's website.
The ability to manipulate our virtual robots on our computer screens in Mlcad after we have "built" them is neat and adds an element of "what if" to our building, but it can't compete with playing with the real bricks.

MLCAD can play back your assembly showing you all the parts added before each step.
When MLCAD is playing back construction steps, it draws the parts from previous steps darker than parts from the current step to make it easy to tell which parts are new to the current step.

 WSU Robotics in the Classroom
One of the problems of CAD programs like MLCAD and LDraw is that you can put the LEGO pieces in the wrong places which you cannot when you are building with the actual LEGO pieces.
Everyone seemed to be doing his/her own thing and more interested in presenting and showing off their own solutions rather than working out a solution as a whole group.
MLCAD is great especially when using the mutlimodel.

Starting with the files on the vexcad.com site and with a whole lot of help from a friend creating missing parts, a very usable set has already been converted for use within MLCAD using the awesome stl2dat.exe program.
MLCAD is part of the LDRAW set of tools which includes the ability to turn a model into a nearly professionally drawn instruction set.

But I finally finished that, and I've finally finished this: MLCAD models and step-by-step instructions for how to build a Legoprise all by yourself.
But if you appreciate all of my effort and want to show support, or if you actually plan on attempting to construct the model, then I personally think $5 is a perfectly reasonable price.

 OrionRobots : MLCad
There are some very interesting multi-control input devices (like the space-ball) used in professional CAD software, but sadly none of them are compatible with MLCad.
MLCad has an option to sort peices by their height - this may help with simple models - but is not a great deal of use with complex mechanisms.
If you have neglected to do this when inputting the whole model, then ensure you create a new version before adding the steps in later.

*When the new MLCad CD is used in a different computer, MLCad will attempt to open and a pop-up window will appear asking for the Ldraw library path.
I just copied the files over to my Desktop and MLCAD works fine, it picked up the root of the parts automatically and didn't ask me, so I guess the information is contained within a file.
He is into LEGO, I got him to use MLCad, and he is a PC wizard.

Those localized versions are put together and supported by volunteers: at the time MLCad "speaks" French, Czech, Japanese, Polish, Dutch, Spanish, German and Italian.
Some of these add-ons can be found at MLCad's homepage, some are hosted by the person who translated the program into his/her mother tongue.
The dialog window will be replaced by a new dialog telling that you have to close the program and restart it to make the change effective.

At first I told myself that I'd model the whole thing in MLCAD and end up with a virtual Enterprise to match my actual Enterprise.
Every deck plan on the graph paper has little red dots where the anchors are located, and I even inserted virtual posts into MLCAD so that I'd know where to place each new deck.
By the time I was up to floor 36 - that's the engineering deck, and the point where the warp nacelles are attached - I had completely run out of the gray Legos I needed.

A dialog may be displayed, telling you the path is invalid, and then the Settings Dialog of MLCad pops up where you have to enter the LDRAW root directory.
Restart MLCad and in the settings you should have the italian language for selection.
After a restart of MLCad you are ready to use the new language.

As for MLCad, I was spoiled by creator in a way where the parts "snapped" together.
With MLCad, I had a heck of a time lining up the parts, and went back and totally redid my grids till they made sense.
It's true that MLCAD is very much "do it by eye", but it's a minor drawback, you can still do a lot with it, though I've often wondered if you made a bunch of TECHNIC parts in Inventor could you hook them together and make them move?
