This Timeless Moment - A Stefan Klopp Weblog » APC vs Zend vs MMCache vs Ioncube
They were currently using mmcache as our encoder/optimizer, however due it the lack of support and several bugs (especially for high trafficed sites) they needed to move to a different solution.
The reason for using the lower version of PHP for mmcache was because of the foreach bug with it and any later version of PHP.
It must be a testiment to MMCache in that it hasn’t seen any new development since 2003 yet still is top of the field (shame about the bugs however).

Smarty :: View topic - Turck MMCache cache handler
In a scenario where a user interface (read page wide template) is split into different sections (to eliminate expensive DB calls for mostly stale data while still having some page sections as dynamic) in conjuction with a hacked {clipcache} block function http://www.phpinsider.com/smarty-forum/viewtopic.php?t=1343, this yields a huge performance increase.
It seemed to me mmcache reads a cached content even if it was already expired and sometimes it didn't overwrite the expired one on a new cache write.
A mmcache write call consumes x2 the amount of memory to store the actual data for a key and this could cause havoc on a multiple-vhost-smarty-powered box.

I have been using mmcache from TurckSoft for about 45 days in a php-heavy dynamic environment.
I prefer mmcache over Zend Accelerator, phpa and After Burner because (1) it offers excellent caching performance, second best to Zend's but without the additional cost; (2) it is not intrusive as phpa can be; and (3) it is highly customizable for process optimization.

Contact Dmitry Stogov at http://turck-mmcache.sourceforge.net for a later version of Turck MMCache.
It's come a long way in development, is actively updated (including by someone who is on the actual php team, I believe), and rumour has it it could also be included in php6 as the standard optimizer.
I'm moving more toward APC for servers I maintain as it seems stable/bug-free, and its web interface to show you stats about what it has cached seems slightly better then mmcache's was (though of little importance on the whole).

I have heard quite a lot of good reports on how Turck MMCache for PHP can improve performance.
Performance does not just matter the high traffic sites, but with sites hosted on over-saturated shared hosting, or on a wimpy box like mine, it is still a good thing to have PHP performing well, especially considering how many inefficiently programmed PHP scripts are out there.
Turch MMCache is great - it increases the performance of your PHP scripts without any code re-writes.
