The MMDF software, when it sees that mail is to go to a list, looks in the indicated recipients file, and grabs this list of people to send to.
MMDF, unmodified, sends a note to the postmaster that a certain address in a certain list file is so obviously bad that it can't be dealt with.
I modified MMDF slightly so that it passes this message to the filter /usr/mmdf/badlistmsg.pl. This filter checks to see what mailing list MMDF is talking about, and sends it on the owner of that list.

The MMDF Frequently Asked Questions List (FAQ)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The current MMDF source release is otherwise tragically short of working configuration examples for use in today's Internet, in which DNS lookups may time out or provide bad information, maildrops may exist on temporarily unavailable NFS-mounted directories, and where other gotchas may provide general interference in the smooth operation of your mail system.
MMDF's sendmail stub deliberately chooses to use the -f parameter as both the envelope From and the message From:, rewriting the message From: as it goes.
Included with the MMDF source tree are two documents that describe the authorization facility: Title: Authorisation and accounting in store and forward message handling systems Authors: D.H. Brink and S.E. Kille Where: http://www.irvine.com/~mmdf/doc/authorization.html Comments: Part of the standard MMDF documentation collection.

 Review: MMDF
Unlike Sendmail, MMDF is not burdened by the extra complexity of mechanisms for dealing with mail transports that the contemporary mail administrator is unlikely to be concerned with.
MMDF is designed to make security controls on message routing and delivery easy to configure, causing it to have been a favourite of military and governmental organisations for a long time.
MMDF can therefore control the routing of mail according to who it came from, how it arrived, and where it is going to, allowing one to (for example) restrict access between a private corporate mail network and the public Internet.

Since MMDF files are frequently accessed by multiple programs in paral- lel, MMDF files should generally not be accessed without locking.
If multiple methods are combined, an MMDF file must not be considered to have been successfully locked before all individual locks were obtained.
MMDF was developed at the University of Delaware by Dave Crocker.

 MMDF Users Group
MMDF is a freely distributable Internet "Mail Transfer Agent (MTA)" written in C that runs on various flavours of UNIX.
MMDF is the standard mail system on SCO UNIX, but is not as widely deployed as some other MTAs, such as Sendmail.
The MMDF Users Group is an ad hoc set of folks who use MMDF for mail transfer, cooperate on advancing/improving MMDF, and cooperate on advancing/improving the documentation for MMDF.

MMDF allows host names to contain underscore characters; this is an extension of internet standards.
MMDF provides transparent access to the different networks and mail transport protocols, regardless of the Mail User Agent employed (one or more MUAs may be used on a single system).
This program may be run at installation time and any time after that when the system undergoes a major change, such as when you connect your machine to a new network or remove it from an existing one.

This makes MMDF a highly modular system, with each module having the least privilege neccessary and with the authority of each module paritioned from others.
Some examples of MMDF channels are SMTP, UUCP, and local (for deliving mail into local mailboxes and accepting mail submitted on the local system).
MMDF is still being developed by SCO and by others who are attached to its particular balance of security, ease of use, and generality.

MMDF has a couple of corners where it does not quite fit RFC822.
Or, for the more pedantic, Demon began on SCO systems where MMDF was the standard MTA.
Even after SCO was no longer an issue, MMDF was kept because it was, at that time, the most effective way of handling our customer mail.

 MMDF to Exchange- and Back!
MMDF is smart enough to know what hosts use uucp, and will only use uucp for mail addressed to those hosts.
The local MMDF would not recognize the domain, so it would send the mail to its "smart host"- the corporate server- by uucp.

In the MMDF Configuration Manager, specify that you want to forward mail addressed to unknown hosts over the badhosts channel to the smart host (the gateway) mekong.mynet.COM.
When you have finished, MMDF is configured on all three machines so that seine and yangtze will forward all unrecognized local mail to mekong, which knows about both machines.
This is simpler than the configuration shown in ``Setting up MMDF on a TCP/IP network'', in which you would have to reconfigure every system on the network.

 Message routing in MMDF (25-Oct-1994)
The MMDF system can be thought of as two subsystems, responsible for mail submission and mail delivery, respectively.
The routing process is performed, independently, for each address that MMDF has to deal with.
Once the address is looked up and checked to MMDF's satisfaction, it will have an initial destination host (or domain); this will be the first in the chain in the case of a multi-hop route.
