Massively multiplayer online game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some MMOGs are played on a mobile device (usually a phone) and are thus Mobile MMOG or MMMOG or 3MOG.
The first graphical MMOG, and a major milestone in the creation of the genre, is the multi-player flight combat simulation game Air Warrior by Kesmai on the GEnie online service, which first appeared in 1987.
The popularity of MMOGs was mostly restricted to the computer game market until the sixth-generation consoles, with the launch of Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and the emergence and growth of online service Xbox Live.

 MMOG Exit Motivation Research
MMOGs require that achievements are recorded over a long period of time and thus have a permanence that is lacking in MMOGs.
Given claims that between 12% and 16% of all MMOG players are female (Yee, 2002b), this possibly suggests that the sources used to collect respondents from may be male dominated or that female MMOG players were less likely to respond to the exit survey.
It also perhaps indicates that these MMOG players are on the leading edge of internet technology, but whether they have purchased high-speed access to improve their MMOG experience or already had high-speed access and found it useful to have when playing MMOGs is impossible to say.

 The Narrative-Nudge MMOG
MMOG economies to date are not satisfying as world-simulations and they are not satisfying as games.
MMOGs can never be virtual worlds until they abandon the character as the primary unit of persistence.
This is the dream of many MMOG players: they beg for gameworlds in which their actions matter, in which there are events of consequence.

Gamasutra - Features - "The Birth Of The Mobile MMOG"
According to MMO Worlds (www.mmoworlds.com), there are almost 60 MMOGs on the market today (not counting the various expansion packs for games like EverQuest), and many times that number of MMOGs under development.
Most PC games have a life span of just a few months, whereas MMOGs can last for years partly because of their tight relationship with players and their ability to evolve the game world around the player.
MMOGs often adopt a business model whereby the income is less dependent on a middleman (i.e., a retailer), so a larger part of the money can be reinvested into to the game and/or company.

Stratics Central - How to Build an MMOG...
In practical terms, you may be the longest-serving player on every one of the top ten MMOG's, but you have probably have no direct real experience of building one, and “walking the walk” is a heck of a lot harder than “talking the talk”.
However, be very careful: the market for MMOG servers is far from mature, and only about 25% of the licensable MMOG server engines are worth using at all – in the long run the rest may cost you more time than they save.
Making an MMOG work as a project and as a service is orders of magnitude more complex than producing a single-player game, and requires little in the way of games-industry-specific knowledge.

Something I hadn't really thought about all THAT much before was that there really isnt THAT much Heroism in your standard Hack and Slash MMOGs out there - the game mechanics are biased against Heroic attacks in general (You generally don't even THINK about taking on something higher con than you).
