Ideally, the character representing the Player in a MMORPG is different from the virtual persona in other games in that it is "unique" to the particular Player.
Because of the varying Character abilities and gameplay styles provided by the RPG design, MMORPG designers need to provide the Player a variety of means, and accommodate possibilities (the Character hires an NPC with a boat to get to the island, picks the lock of the door, and scales the castle wall after dark).
In MMORPG terms, the client can be said to open a session when it connects to the host, but the host session is (ideally) permanently open.
