Commodore.ca | History | MOS Technology & the Rise of the 6502 Processor
MOS' claim to fame was their development and manufacturing of the wildly successful 6500 line of microprocessors which in addition to being used in nearly all Commodore computers and floppy drives, was also the driving force of all pre-1984 Apples.
Chuck Peddle, we were informed commodore.ca that MOS was always pronounced M.O.S. so as not to confuse it with the MOSTek which was a competing company that was also established in 1969.
MOS was able to produce the chips at this low price because they increased their yield dramatically by reducing flaws in their chips 'masks' before starting production.

 Commodore PET
However in 1975 TI increased the price to the point where the chip set alone cost more than what TI sold their entire calculators for, and the industry they had build up was frozen out of the market.
Commodore responded by looking for a chip set of their own they could purchase outright, and quickly found MOS Technologies who were bringing their 6502 design to market.
It was essentially the KIM-1 with a new display chip (the MOS 6545) driving a small built-in fl-and-white monitor with 40x25 character graphics.

Commodore and their mpu wing, MOS Technology have come up with a product which while technologically unsurprising is revolutionary from a packaging and marketing point of view.
The microprocessor system uses the (big surprise) MOS Technology 6502 mpu, with 14k of ROM containing everything to operate the hardware, and purportedly a very fast interpreter for BASIC.
This uses six lines of the 16 on the second 6520 PIA (we assume) leaving 10 lines, 8 for parallel 1/0, and 2 serial, at TTL levels.

The 6507 is an 8-bit microprocessor from MOS Technology, Inc. It is a "cut down" version of their popular 6502.
Most other machines, notably home computers based on the 650x architecture, MOS Technologies 6501 used the "full" 6502.in order to allow for more memory.
By the time the 6502 line was becoming widely used around 1980, ROM and RAM semiconductor memory prices had fallen to the point where the 6507 was no longer a worthwhile simplification.

The MOS Technologies 650x most popular 6502 based computer, the Commodore 64, used a modified 6502 CPU, the 6510.

 MOS Technology 6502
The MOS Technology 6502 is an 8-bit microprocessor designed by MOS Technology in 1975.
When it was introduced it was the least expensive full featured CPU on the market by far, at about 1/6th the price, or less, of competing designs from larger companies such as Motorola and Intel.
Motorola immediately sued, and although today the case would have been dismissed out of hand, the damage to MOS was enough for them to agree to stop producing the 6501.

The Pre-C64 History of Jack Tramiel and Commodore Computer
In 1976, Tramiel reacts to the calculator fiasco by purchasing MOS Technologies, one of their former suppliers of semiconductors, Frontier (another manufacturer of ICs) and Micro Display Systems (as the name suggest, a supplier of LED Displays).
Being the ruthless business man that he is, one of the first things he did after buying MOS Technologies was to cut off most of MOS' about 200 research projects.
Up to then, the only application for the 6502 had been the MOS KIM-1 single board computer, which, in a manner of speaking, is the ancestor of all Commodore computers up to 1985.
