MOS Technology 6551 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 6551 Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter (ACIA) was an integrated circuit made by MOS Technology.
Commodore International omitted the 6551 from the popular VIC-20, C64, and C128 home computers.
Evil Labs and Creative Micro Designs, marketed an add-on cartridge containing a 6551 and an industry-standard RS-232 port to allow the C64 and 128 to use high-speed modems from companies such as US Robotics and Hayes Communications.

 MOS Technology 6502
The MOS Technology 6502 is an 8-bit microprocessor designed by MOS Technology in 1975.
When it was introduced it was the least expensive full featured CPU on the market by far, at about 1/6th the price, or less, of competing designs from larger companies such as Motorola and Intel.
Motorola immediately sued, and although today the case would have been dismissed out of hand, the damage to MOS was enough for them to agree to stop producing the 6501.

Science Fair Projects - MOS Technology 6551
The MOS 6551 Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter was a simple UART chip produced by MOS Technology.
A companion chip to the widely popular 6502 microprocessor, it was intended to be used to implement RS-232, and its specifications called for a maximum speed of 19,200 bits per second.
Several companies, including Dr. Evil Labs and Creative Micro Devices, marketed an add-on cartridge containing a 6551 and an industry-standard RS-232 port to allow the C64 and 128 to use high-speed modems from companies such as US Robotics and Hayes Communications.

MOS Technology SID Information - MOS Technology SID
The MOS Technology 6581/8580 SID (Sound Interface Device) was the built-in sound chip of Commodore's CBM-II, Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 home computers.
It was one of the first sound chips of its kind to be included in a home computer prior to the digital sound revolution.
The 8580 was made using the HMOS-II process, which required less power (9V DC), and therefore made the IC MOS Technology SID run cooler.

However, in 1975 TI increased the price to the point where the chip set alone cost more than what TI sold their entire calculators for, and the industry they had built up was frozen out of the market.
Commodore responded by looking for a chip set of their own they could purchase outright, and quickly found MOS Technology, Inc. who were bringing their 6502 microprocessor design to market.
It was essentially the KIM-1 with a new display chip (the MOS 6545) driving a small built-in monochrome monitor with 40×25 character graphics.

The 6507 is an 8-bit microprocessor from MOS Technology, Inc. It is a "cut down" version of their popular 6502.
Most other machines, notably home computers based on the 650x architecture, MOS Technologies 6501 used the "full" 6502.in order to allow for more memory.
By the time the 6502 line was becoming widely used around 1980, ROM and RAM semiconductor memory prices had fallen to the point where the 6507 was no longer a worthwhile simplification.

Commodore 64 - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site
With estimated sales between 17 and 25 million units by the time it was discontinued in 1993, the C64 became and remains the best-selling computer model of all time.
The cost of building each C64 was estimated at US$135 due to Commodore's vertical integration (Commodore owned MOS Technology, Inc, who manufactured most of the chips), leaving a large margin to work with.
Inexplicably, however, Commodore replaced the 6551 UART chip with a software emulator just prior to the machine's release, the software UART dramatically reducing the speed potential of the C64's modem interface.

Commodore' engineers chose this design to save money; MOS Technology chips in the early 1980s were extremely expensive to produce.
It was not so much a poor design as it was a lack of foresight, but it was not really Commodore's fault; those were the days when 2400 bps, let alone 14.4Kbps, was mostly dreamed of.
A 6551 by itself transfers data at 19200 bps, but an added crystal can doubles its speed to 38400 bps -- exactly what our new 64/128 can handle, and its present in the Swiftlink.

The cost of building each C64 was estimated at US$135 due to Commodore's vertical integration and more crucially, MOS Technology's integrated-circuit fabrication facilities, leaving a large margin to work with.
After the release of the C64C, MOS Technology began to reconfigure the C64's chipset to use HMOS technology.

They were used in World War II for AT weapons, but only after the war was the technology used in mines.
AT and AP mines were originally produced in steel, though the Soviet Union experimented with wood, and the Germans used pottery, glass and Bakelite as the external case.
The Swedish Type FFV 028 pioneered this technology - this mine would explode even if a tank straddled it, since its magnetic field operated the fuse, so the mine attacked the full width of the AFV.
