  MOS Technology SID - Biocrawler
MOS Technology SIDs: The right image shows a 6581 from MOS Technology, at the time they were known as the Commodore Semiconductor Group (CSG) and the left image shows an 8580 from MOS Technology.
The SID features three-voice synthesis, where each voice may use one of four different waveforms: square wave (with variable pulse width), triangle wave, sawtooth wave and a random (white noise) wave.
The original manual for the SID mentions that if several waveforms are enabled at the same time, the result will be a logical AND between them, but only the 8580 actually has this functionality: on the 6581 some waveform combinations will only yield silence or be close to inaudible depending on the chip revision.

  MOS Technologies - Wikipedia
MOS Technologies, also known as Commodore Semiconductor Group, was a microprocessor and calculator company famous for its 6502 processor.
MOS had also designed a simple computer kit called the KIM-1, primarily to "show off" the 6502 chip.
After Commodore's bankruptcy in 1994, the Commodore Semiconductor Group (the former MOS Technology) was bought by its former management for about $4.3 million, plus an additional $1 million to cover miscellaneous expenses including EPA liens.

 Interview with Bob Yannes
I'm afraid I haven't thought much about SID in the last 15 years...I am constantly amazed and gratified at the number of people who have been positively affected by the SID chip and the Commodore 64 (which I also designed) and who continue to do productive things with them despite their "obsolescence".
The SID chip was my first attempt at a phase-accumulating oscillator, which is the heart of all wavetable synthesis systems.
SID chip production was completely consumed by the Commodore 64 and by the time chips were readily available, I had left Commodore and never had the opportunity to improve the fidelity of the chip.

MOS Technology SID - Free net encyclopedia
The SID has Template:US patent, which was filed on February 27, 1983 and issued on July 7, 1987.
The SID features three-voice synthesis, where each voice may use one of four different waveforms: square wave (with variable pulse width), triangle wave, sawtooth wave and a pseudo-random (but not white noise) wave.
The original manual for the SID mentions that if several waveforms are enabled at the same time, the result will be a logical AND between them, but only the 8580 actually has this functionality: on the 6581 some waveform combinations will only yield silence or be close to inaudible, depending on the chip revision.

Together with the VIC-II graphics chip, the SID was instrumental in making the C64 the best-selling computer in history, and is partly credited for initiating the demoscene.
The SID was devised by engineer Robert "Bob" Yannes, who later founded the Ensoniq digital synthesizer company.
High-resolution photos of Charles Winterble's prototype C64 show the markings "MOS 6581 2082" (no R2 thus presumably an R1) which probably means that the first round of prototype SID chips were produced week 20, 1982.

SID generates what is known as Blue Noise: a minimum frequency is set and all frequencies above this minimum are generated with equal probability; thus SID noise is biased towards higher frequencies.
Due to time constraints, the oscillators in SID were not multiplexed, therefore they took up a lot of chip area, constraining the number of voices I could fit on a chip.
SID chip production was completely consumed by the Commodore 64 and by the time chips were readily available, I had left Commodore and never had the opportunity to improve the fidelity of the chip.

My intention in designing the chip (since MOS Technology was a merchant semiconductor house at the time and sold chips to the outside world) was to be able to sell the SID chip to synthesizer manufacturers.
Like an analog envelope generator, the SID Envelope Generator would track the Sustain level if it was changed to a lower value during the Sustain portion of the envelope, however, it would not count UP if the Sustain level were set higher.

MOS scores can be arrived at based on network performance measures such as jitter and latency.
That requires monitoring the performance of the voice application, using for instance MOS, and the underlying network infrastructure issues that affect voice performance, such as latency, jitter, packet loss and echo.
Most VoIP technology vendors supply some testing and monitoring capabilities with their products, but there are other tools on the market that will help too, Johnson says.
