Currently, for MOSIS, the Agilent/HP 0.50 micron, the AMI 0.50 micron, and all the 0.35 micron and smaller processes are in this category.
MOSIS quietly fills in the open areas on projects fabricated on the affected processes.
MOSIS customers may request these antenna rules for a specific submicron process by submitting a request to MOSIS Support.

MOSIS Scalable CMOS (SCMOS) is a set of logical layers together with their design rules, which provide a nearly process- and metric-independent interface to all CMOS fabrication processes available through MOSIS.
MOSIS Scalable design rules require that layout is on a 1/2 lambda grid.
MOSIS has defined an optional layer (called XP in CIF and numbered 26 in GDSII) to help users tell MOSIS which pads are to be bonded and which are not.

If we download the GDS file from MOSIS for the process we are using we can convert it to a TLC files using the GDS2TLC utility on the system menu.
MOSIS wants to receive a layout that is the actual size of the final chip not the drawn size (and that is why we specify 2200 by 2200 in the email above).
The MOSIS system is really well done so that if you made a mistake you can generally tell by the automated responses.

Wes: MOSIS started off as an acronym for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Implementation System.  After that it became called the MOSIS service or just MOSIS, as I like to say, so we have gone past the acronym, although we still capitalize it.
Right now, MOSIS has hundreds upon hundreds of active accounts that we're collecting designs for.  We do about 2,000 designs a year.  We've done more than 50,000 designs - and these are unique designs, not copies of designs - in our almost 25-year history.
The technologies we work with are typically CMOS-based, either CMOS by itself or CMOS with silicon-germanium bipolar devices added.  The geometries range from a half-micron, or 500-nanometer, down to 130-nanometer.  I would expect to see 90 nanometers in the not-too-distant future.

 Impact of the Mead-Conway VLSI Design Methodology and of the MOSIS Service
Lynn's MPC technology was transferred to Xerox PARC to USC-ISI to become the foundation for the MOSIS System, which has been used and evolved since 1981 as a national infrastructure for fast-turnaround prototyping of VLSI chip designs by universities and researchers.
Much of this explosion in developments and applications of the Mead-Conway work and impacts of the MOSIS System are documented in a recent National Research Council Publication entitled Funding a Revolution.
A new book entitled Dealers of Lightning: Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age by Michael Hiltzik (HarperCollins Publishers, 1999), tells the early history of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, and the tremendous contributions to modern computing technology that were made there.
