The MP38 was the first submachine gun developed for the German Army since the MP18 of World War I. Although the design has been credited to Schmeisser in many publications, it was probably designed by Erma as first production was carried out on that plant.
The MP38 was modified to remedy this defect by the fitting of a two-piece bolt handle and the cutting of a slot above the front of the bolt receiver track to lock the bolt into the forward position.
The weapon produced as a result was called the MP40, which differs from the MP38 in the following: new ejector, magazine release assembly, receiver (ribbing eliminated), grip frame of the MP38 is aluminium whilst he MP40 is formed, and the stamped middle tube of the recoil spring assembly is drawn and pinched on the MP40.

Beyond the Call of Duty - MP38/40
The MP38 and MP40 were adopted by Wehrmacht in 1938 and 1940.
Initially, MP38 was intended for use by paratroopers and vehicle crews, but later was widely used by german infantry.
The main drawbacks of the MP38/40 were the lack of the front handguards that often resulted burned hands during the sustained fire, and the lack of the effective range, when compared to its soviet counterparts (PPSch-41, PPS-43), chambered for the more powerful 7.62mm TT round.

 MP40 SMG
When the predecessor to the Maschinenpistole 40 or the MP40, the MP38, was first produced in 1938, the design was revolutionary because of the way the weapon was manufactured.
Unlike the Luger, the MG34 and the all other German small arms before it, the MP38 was designed for mass production, like the Model T Ford.
Because of its light weight, the gun was highly esteemed and favored by the German Fallshirmjägers paratroopers and panzer grenadiers.

The MP38 was the standard German submachine gun of World War II.
Two years later, it was replaced by the MP38, which was identical except used less expensive stamped metal for certain parts, which was more cost effective for a mass produced weapon.
It was a very successful firearm and even Allied forces preferred them over their own submachine guns and scavenged MP40s whenever possible.

Capable of operating on ±100V supplies, the MP38 is one of Apex's new "open frame" product designs that offers customers greater thermal efficiencies at a per unit cost up to 75% lower than hermetically packaged, hybrid components.
The MP38 can achieve even greater operating efficiences in applications where crossover distortion is not important.
By combining high voltage output with up to 40 KHz of power bandwidth, the MP38 is also ideal for driving ultra-sonic transducers using a resonant circuit that includes the transducer and a matching transformer.

Additional performance features offered by the MP38 and MP39 include an optional boost voltage input to allow the small signal portion of the amplifier to operate at higher supply voltages than the high current output stage.
For applications where crossover distortion is not important, an lq pin is available on the MP38 to shut off the quiescent current in the output stage.
Both the MP38 and MP39 are excellent choices in motor drive applications because of their high output current and high voltage supply operation.

The revolutionary MP38 machinepistole made its combat debut with the German blitzkrieg invasion of Poland that began on 1 September, 1939.
The development time to the resulting MP38 in August of that same year was extraordinarily brief.
The reason for the seemingly rapid development of the weapon was due in part to the model Erma Werk already had under development.

Also, (The Nazi dictatorship under Hitler (1933-1945)) Nazi Germany adopted the MP38, unique in that it had used no wood and a folding metal stock, though it used similar amount of stampings as the MAS.
During the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in 1939, the MP38 production was still just starting and only a few thousand were in service, but it proved very popular especially in towns and cities.
The MP40's design used even more stampings, and less important metals such as aluminium, but still managed to be lighter because it avoided the some of the heavier machined parts of the MP38.

Details and datasheet on part: MP38
The MP38 is a cost-effective high voltage MOSFET power operational amplifier constructed with surface mount components on a thermally conductive but electrically isolated substrate.
While the cost is low the MP38 offers many of the same features and performance specifications found in much more expensive hybrid power amplifiers.
The MP38 must be used with a heat sink or the quiescent power may drive the unit to junction temperatures higher than 175°C. The MP38 is constructed from MOSFET transistors.

Further developments and improvements and the need for a cheaper mass produced weapon resulted in the introduction of the MP40 in April 1940.
The MP38 and the MP40 both utilized a bottom loaded, thirty-two cartridge stick magazine.

The MP40 Submachine Gun is the first illustrated book to describe in detail what was arguably the best such weapon used in World War II — the German MP40 submachine gun.
It follows the path of its development from the first SMG designs of World War I through the refinements of later post-war models used by several nations, and its direct predecessor, the MP38, culminating in the robust, mass-produced weapon that was used by the German armies — and their enemies — on all fronts.
