		MPE Programming was the art of writing system programs entirely in the "language" of CI commands (possibly with some help from standard, HP-supplied utilities).
		MPE XL was intended to make many of these things a lot simpler to do -- instead of weird, indirect techniques, mechanisms would be provided for easily getting environment information (your logon mode, etc.), file information (does a file exist?), and so on.
		MPE V had the (small) set of things you can do easily and the far larger set of things you could do if you really stood the system on its head.

		MPE even has process-temporary files that are private to a program and go away when that process terminates or aborts.

	X-Ray Astronomy
		One of the major projects of the X-ray astronomy group at MPE in the 1990's was ROSAT (launched 1st June 1990) which provided the first all-sky survey with an imaging X-ray telescope in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV energy band.
		Current research activities concentrate on the analysis of data obtained from the X-ray observatories XMM-Newton launched in December 1999 and Chandra launched in July 1999.
		MPE was substantially involved in the development, testing and calibration of the X-ray telescopes and the EPIC-pn camera for XMM-Newton and the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) for Chandra.

		A loosely based group of die-hard users who want to hold on to a dying system, won't make the cut of systems to be evaluated.
		I know several HP 3000 advocates are listening, and I know the potential legal pitfalls of committing to this before all the details can be worked out, I just want to know if they are really willing to do this or is this just a pointless discussion.
		No HP 3000 users in their right mind whether it be MIS, CEO or end user would not still use MPE if they could port to Linux, UNIX, or NT without losing their application and all the investment they have in their systems.

	Using Apache with HP MPE/iX
		While MPE has a very good POSIX implementation that enables fairly simple porting of Unix applications such as Apache, there are some Unix concepts which just don't exist or aren't fully implemented in MPE, and so this may force some functionality changes in the package being ported.
		Apache for MPE in standalone mode cannot detach itself and run in the background because MPE POSIX doesn't allow this (the detached child would be killed when the parent terminated).
		I consider MPE 5.5 inetd to be broken and poorly documented, so I submitted SR 5003355016 to address this.
