For a PhD student, Option B of the MPhil in Economics is the foundation year of a period of training lasting a minimum of three and an average of four years.
The topic of the MPhil dissertation for a student taking Option B should be closely related to the subject of the proposed PhD research, and must be formally approved by the Faculty.

 MPhil in International Finance
The MPhil in International Finance and Economic Policy brings together economic and financial perspectives by drawing from the expertise of two departments which already have well developed postgraduate programmes within their own fields.
The MPhil in International Finance and Economic Policy is offered on the basis of a one-year full-time programme of study, consisting of two terms of coursework followed by a project or dissertation.
MPhil students may choose to voluntarily attend Research Methodology which is non-examinable, for instruction in the methodology of research and inquiry.

Applications for admission to the MPhil and the conditions of enrolment are subject to approval by the Postgraduate Studies Committee under delegated authority of the Academic Board.
For each MPhil candidate, the Postgraduate Studies Committee appoints a supervisory panel, one member of which is a continuing staff member of the University and the chief supervisor.
An MPhil thesis may consist of either published or unpublished material, or a combination of both and must be presented within the term of enrolment.
