United Kingdom general election, 1945 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The British general election of 1945 held on July 5th 1945 but not counted and declared until July 26 1945 (due to the time it took to transport the votes of those serving overseas) was one of the most significant general elections of the 20th century.
Held just months after VE Day, it was the first general election to be held since 1935, as general elections had been suspended during World War II.
It resulted in the shock election defeat of the Conservatives led by Winston Churchill and the landslide victory of the Labour Party led by Clement Attlee, who won a majority of 145 seats.

The United Kingdom general election of 2005 was held on Thursday, 5 May, 2005 and won by the Labour Party, led by Tony Blair.
In Northern Ireland, the election was dominated in the Unionist community by a battle between the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to be the province's largest Unionist party in Parliament.
Other elections in the province have shown both a shift in votes towards the DUP but also a collapse of support for the cross-community Alliance Party which is likely to be more marked in a first past the post election and thus which may work in the UUP's favour.

Throughout the election the Labour party had maintained a significant lead in the opinion polls and the result was deemed to be so certain that some bookmakers paid out for a Labour majority before the election day.

I have analysed the voting results of the General Election and implemented an Election Lottery where each vote serves as a lottery ticket with the preferred candidate's name on it.
Thus serving MPs are the most likely candidates in their constituency to be returned by the election as they have attracted the most votes.
An Election Lottery achieves this Proportional Representation, while tying the selection of every candidate firmly to the electorates in his or her constituency, thus avoiding any charges of cronyism.

Voting reform has always suffered from the tendency of MPs of the governing party, elected by the existing first-past-the-post system, to be less critical of its faults than candidates excluded by the same system.
He strongly believed that the people should be allowed to decide how their MPs are elected and proposed that a referendum should be held on the voting system for Westminster.
The first-past-the-post campaign, generously resourced and funded by the AEEU union, tried to flood the LP membership consultation on the AV+ proposal with hostile pre-printed postcards, in an attempt to get the LP national policy forum to drop the referendum pledge and commit the Party to first-past-the-post.
