RMS Olympic: Another Premature Death?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
In this respect the grandiose pools of the Berengaria and Majestic were certainly superior to the Aquitania and Olympic’s plainer pools, while their public rooms were somewhat grander in size, but the huge variations in accommodation made their facilities hard to compare.
Aquitania, Berengaria and Olympic all made crossings in the region of twenty-two to twenty-three knots, although Olympic has to have been considered slower owing to her higher number of passages at twenty-one knots.
Berengaria needed extensive repairs by February 1930, to rectify considerable wasted plating in her watertight bulkheads dividing the boiler rooms, which were hard to access owing to the boiler layout and masses of pipes; plating was renewed, stiffeners strengthened and doublers fitted.

 Berengaria
Berengaria never set foot in England until long after the death of her husband, Richard the Lionheart, who didn't spend much time there either.
Actually, he wasn't a big fixture in Berengaria's life since he was busy with the Third Crusade (and perhaps his boyfriends - although Richard's sexual preferences are shrouded in the mists of time) during their seven years of marriage.
Paschal noted, "Berengaria's skeleton was rediscovered and analyzed by French scholars.

The author Bard (aptly named!) has crafted an ingenious combination of historic fact and valid conjecture into a novel that tells the story of an important and practically forgotten Basque woman.
Thanks to Bard's efforts, Berengaria has escaped being a figure lost in history, and has risen out of the mists of obsolescence into the light of historic fiction.
The history is accurate, and the fictional story is elegantly woven into the period setting.

Any study of the royal dynasties of Great Britain usually treats a monarch's spouse as a shadowy figure of no real importance, once the diplomatically important marriage has been made.
Or Berengaria of Navarre, pro forma wife of the possibly homosexual Richard I? (Cook calls her "the first unlucky Spanish-born English queen.") Or Mary of Teck, George V's queen?
By the time he was born, Eleanor and Henry had been legally married for some fifteen months.

Amazon.com: FOLLIES OF THE KING (Plaidy, Jean, Plantagenet Saga.): Books: Jean Plaidy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Plaidy tells the story of King Edward II who, as did his ancestor Richard the Lionhearted, preferred the company and affections of men over that of women.
Unlike his ancestor, who was married to the complaisant and submissive, Berengaria, who did not make waves about Richard's lack of attention, Edward II had a wife that was secretly infuriated by her husband's predilection for young men.
Interestingly enough, nowhere in this work of historical fiction does the author make use of the work homosexual, though that is really the only inference a reader may draw about the romantic proclivities of Edward II.
