Why Microsoft makes a mistake with the MSDN subscription changes.
I think the real reason behind a lot of the negativity about the new MSDN model is fed by the fact that these developers, myself included, simply want to buy a package from Microsoft which allows them to write software, use sourcecontrol, have unit-tests, use fancy designers and do bugtracking/issue management.
In the past year, Microsoft bombed us with their Team System propaganda and a lot of people were very pleased to see Microsoft made a fully integrated system which did everything: allowed you to architect webservices, test your application with fully integrated test tools, use bugtracking/issue management and much more.
Getting agreement to buy MSDN is still hard but only had to be done once it is included 100% of what I needed to do my job.

Any Server Software provided to you as part of MSDN is provided for your use solely in conjunction with the design, development, testing and demonstration of software products created by you that run in conjunction with the Server Software.
For each MSDN license acquired that includes Desktop Applications, you may make and to use one additional copy of any of the Desktop Applications provided with your subscription level for business purposes, provided that such business purposes relate specifically to your design, development, testing and demonstration of your software product(s).

As before, each MSDN subscription is only licensed for use by one named subscriber, and the server components can only be used for design, development, test or demonstration purposes.
All MSDN Licensing is User based, not Machine based, so legally you must have one MSDN license for every developer that uses MSDN products for design, development, test and/or demonstration purposes.
MSDN products are not generally licensed for use in a live production/deployment environment.

Comments on the pricing of Team System
Most MSDN Universal subscribers believe that they are getting tens of thousands of dollars of software for $2,799 retail.
A reasonable and honest person who is completely legal on their use of the stuff on the MSDN discs might still be quite dismayed over the new pricing.
I'm not asking every MSDN subscriber to be happy about the pricing -- I am merely surfacing a very general expectation which I think is part of the unhappiness.

The other camp is what I'm going to call the MSDN Magazine camp, which I will name after the developer's magazine full of exciting articles about all the different ways you can shoot yourself in the foot by using esoteric combinations of Microsoft products in your own software.
The MSDN Magazine Camp is always trying to convince you to use new and complicated external technology like COM+, MSMQ, MSDE, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and its components, MSXML, DirectX (the very latest version, please), Windows Media Player, and Sharepoint...
The MSDN Magazine Camp believes in making things easy for developers by giving them really powerful chunks of code which they can leverage, if they are willing to pay the price of incredibly complicated deployment and installation headaches, not to mention the huge learning curve.
