[Mod_gzip] MSIE cannot handle Vary header(s)
MSIE 4.0 was actually getting TOTALLY confused whenever a "Vary:" header would arrive in a response and it was treating it as a download error and putting up a nasty Dialog box.
Once MSIE has cached a page locally then hitting either the FORWARD or BACK buttons or choosing the page from the History list should NOT cause a new request for the page to be emitted from the browser.
MSIE itself has a LOOONG way to go before anyone will be able to use "Vary:" for anything.

Internet Explorer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Internet Explorer, abbreviated IE or MSIE, is a proprietary web browser made by Microsoft and currently available as part of Microsoft Windows.
Internet Explorer is the most widely used web browser today, although since 2004 it has lost some usage share to other browsers.
Internet Explorer uses DOCTYPE sniffing to choose between "quirks mode" (renders similarly to older versions of MSIE) and standards mode (renders strictly according to W3C's specifications) for HTML and CSS rendering.

In a later update, they mention in relation to XP SP2 that they will no longer "upgrade" a document served as text/plain, although without saying in so many words that this corrects a potential security exposure that was created by their failure to conform to this mandatory requirement of the HTTP protocol.
MSIE sent a different Accept header on "Refresh" and similar operations than it sent on initial retrieval.
Then MSIE (at least, that is what its own documentation, in effect, claims, and this does seem to be consistent with observations) will conform with RFC2616, and ask the user what they want to do with this content, i.e download to file or open with some application, just as a normal world-wide-web-compatible browser would do.

 MSIE 7 Analysis
Internet Explorer 7.0 (MSIE) is a response to the popularity of Firefox, as well as a response to (end users and enterprise) customers and developers who are very unhappy with the security problems and nuisances that MSIE has not prevented.
MSIE 7.0 will be offered before Longhorn and targeted for a beta release in the Summer and likely a final release 3 to 5 months later or perhaps final release is Longhorn.
MSIE 7.0 can expect at least one severe vulnerability (or exploit) within 0-2 months to be found outside the company.

Page rendering was quick, location history was cached better, and I got tired of all the krunk that came along with Netscape; mail clients, etc. Microsoft had to produce a quality browser in order to gain near-universal acceptance as the default browser on our computers.
They have not continued to improve MSIE simply because there is no competitive advantage in doing so.
Many might consider that they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to make their site less popular among MSIE users.

MSIE uses the key container name (a weird bunch of digits which looks suspiciously like a GUID) for the friendly name and 00 00 00 01 for the key id.

One of the sites that only works if you identify Opera as MSIE is Skandiabanken.no. I sent them a mail and asked them why they do this, since there are no difference between the act of Opera 7 with different identification.
