 Staten Island Live - Community - Verrazano
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning New York Harbor from Brooklyn to Staten Island, was built by Othmar H. Ammann from 1959 to 1964.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels collected $192.8 million from vehicles crossing the Verrazano -- about 22 percent of an $884.4 million total for all of its crossings.
The tolls and other matters concerning the bridge, as well as issues regarding the Staten Island Railway, subways and buses, are controlled by the MTA board, a 17-member panel appointed by various elected officials around the state.

Because the Manhattan side of the tunnel rises as a bluff overlooking the East River, it was not feasible to extend the line from the tunnel to Midtown streets on a short, direct course without either exceeding acceptable gradients or condemning significant rights-of-way.
The roof of each tunnel, which is comprised of 930 concrete slabs (each slab 20 feet long and weighing eight tons), was to be suspended from steel brackets, and secured by giant steel anchors jammed deep into the concrete shell of the tunnel.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels currently is studying the rehabilitation of the Second Avenue and 36th Street overpasses at the Manhattan tunnel approach.

LIRR and Metro-North prices leap an average of 5 percent on March 1, and tolls on most MTA tunnels and bridges will rise by 50 cents beginning March 13.
The MTA had defended the cars as necessary for those on call at all times or who work at places not easily reached by mass transit, such as bridges.
But on Dec. 15, MTA executive director Katherine Lapp directed agency heads to review all agency cars "to make sure that it was vital that all of those people who had cars did in fact need them," said Tom Kelly, an MTA spokesman.
