MTR - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
MTR Corporation Limited has always been reliant on developing properties next to railway stations for its profits (although the rail lines are profitable themselves); many recently built stations are incorporated into large housing estates or shopping complexes.
After extensive retrofits, the MTR system has become, in general, disabled-friendly — the trains have dedicated wheelchair space, the stations have special floor tiles to guide the blind safely on the platforms, and there are extra wide entry and exit gates for wheelchairs as well.
The network is also set to be significantly expanded with the merger of MTR Corporation Limited with the government-owned Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), with the non-binding Memorandum of Understanding signed on 11 April 2006 to grant MTR Corporation operation of the existing KCR network with a service concession of 50 years.

(a) (i) According to the MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL), it is not feasible to install escalators leading directly to the ground level at all the entrances/exits of MTR stations due to geographical and structural constraints of the stations.
In fact, installation of escalators at certain entrances/exits of MTR stations will reduce the widths of sidewalks causing inconvenience to pedestrians; and underground utilities such as high voltage electric cables, gas mains and truck sewers may also be affected.
The entrances/exits of MTR stations which do not have escalators leading directly to the ground level at present are set out at the Annex.

University Satellite Seminar Series | Background Essay
Popular film comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle's prosecution in a rape/murder trial in 1921 ignited a media frenzy that titillated the public, sold a great many newspapers, and effectively ended Arbuckle's career, despite an eventual acquittal (accompanied by a fulsome letter of apology from the jury lamenting the damage done to the entertainer's good name).
The public's appetite for such scandal is seemingly insatiable, and not limited to spectacles of the fallen mighty: colorful outlaws of obscure origin, like bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde and gangsters Al Capone and John Dillinger, achieved the status of folk heroes through the savagery and outrageousness of their deeds.
Crime itself, if shocking, lurid, or titillating enough, can propel its perpetrator to the status of cultural icon, with the likes of the Son of Sam and the Boston Strangler lodged uneasily alongside Mickey Mouse and Babe Ruth in the public imagination.
