MTV Unplugged in New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American grunge band, Nirvana.
MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released following the death of singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain in April 1994.
MTV Unplugged in New York includes two songs which were not aired on the original television broadcast of the concert: “Something in the Way” and “Oh Me.” Both the album and the broadcast omit a short jam of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”, and instrumental jams of "Sliver," "In Bloom" and other Nirvana songs.

Nirvana (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTV had wanted the band to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but the band wanted to play a new song called "Rape Me".
MTV was appalled at the idea of a song called "Rape Me", and eventually agreed that the band could play "Lithium" instead, the band's then-current single.
The original intention was to release the MTV Unplugged set in a double-disc package, along with a second disc of live electric material to balance the acoustic set.

'Unplugged In New York' is a live album of acoustic tracks from one of the 90's biggest bands.
Recorded live for MTV shortly before Kurt Cobain's death, these pared down reworkings of thier most popular tracks lose none of their potency when played acoustically, bringing a new dimension to already well known tracks.

"MTV Unplugged in New York City" would be a somber enough album as is, but considering Cobain died shortly after it was recorded, the album takes on special meaning.
With "MTV Unplugged in New York City," Cobain should not be mourned, but rather his life and his music should be celebrated.

Nirvana : MTV Unplugged in New York - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
If In Utero is a suicide note, MTV Unplugged in New York is a message from beyond the grave, a summation of Kurt Cobain's talents and pain so fascinating, it's hard to listen to repeatedly.
It's a nakedly emotional record, unintentionally so, as the subtext means more than the main themes of how Nirvana wanted to prove its worth and diversity, showcasing the depth of their songwriting.
As it turns out, it accomplishes its goals rather too well; this is a band, and songwriter, on the verge of discovering a new sound and style.

Despite its relative newness, the LP is averaging just a little better than 2,000 copies a week, as opposed to Illmatic and It Was Written, which are both still selling at a catalog clip of more than 3,000 copies a week — even though they've both been out for more than five years.
Regardless, Clapton's Unplugged was instrumental in re-energizing the guitarist's career after a relatively rum run during the '80s, and after climbing to #1 in March 1993, the album proved to record labels that audiences were willing to buy such stripped-down music en masse.
