 MCP 2.1
In choosing an authentication key, the client should take care to ensure that the key is not easily guessed, as possession of the authentication key (along with the ability to send lines of text to the implementation, an ability possessed by all users on some MUDs) permits the spoofing of MCP messages.
Once the server and client have agreed on MCP 2.1 as described in Section 2.4, they negotiate the packages supported by each side and their versions.
The definition of "server" and "client" here is based on the position the connection endpoints took in the initial MCP startup process: the server (or "initiator") is the endpoint which sent the first MCP message.

MCP has little notion of state; instead, maintenance of state beyond the existence of a MCP-capable connection between the server and client is assumed to be the job of application-specific protocols.

A MUD client is a program written especially for connecting to MUDs (Connections is a MOO; a MOO is a kind of MUD).
Note when the lists you find were last updated--many people put up lists of MUD clients, but few keep them up to date; a list that hasn't been updated in a year or so is likely to have a lot of broken links and outdated information.
Some MUD clients also give you the option to enter your character name and password, so that when you select the MOO by name, you will automatically be logged in as soon as you connect.
