MV Leif Ericson is the company's third passenger ferry, having been purchased in 2001.

Crew members were unfamiliar with the fire-detection system aboard the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood when the blaze broke out May 12 last year, and the ferry lacked essential communications equipment for emergencies.
Investigators also found that just 10 days after the blaze, the ferry's sister ship - the MV Caribou - failed to provide basic safety announcements to passengers as required by law.
Two investigators also travelled aboard the MV Caribou to check on safety announcements, and heard none.

Two Coast Guard icebreakers finally freed the MV Smallwood late Sunday afternoon, allowing it to dock in North Sydney almost three days after it left Port aux Basques, Newfoundland.
The MV Caribou, which spent some 60 hours at sea, was freed from the ice and allowed to dock Saturday night, putting its 188 passengers on solid ground.
The Caribou made it to port with the assistance of the coast guard icebreaker Terry Fox.

This is the old cemetery, located on the way into town but easily within view of the ferry terminal.
Indeed, you can see the MV Caribou in port in the first of the photos below, which were taken on the morning of 29 June 2005 (just after I arrived on the MV Caribou).
This is the cemetery that is easily visible from the port side of the ferries as they enter the harbour (indeed as you can see, while I was touring the cemetery, the MV Leif Ericson arrived).

During both World Wars, North Sydney was a key assembly area for convoys carrying troops and supplies across the North Atlantic.Sydney harbor was heavily defended and the concrete bases of the gun emplacements can still be seen along Shore Road between North Sydney and Sydney Mines.
On October 14, 1942 the S.S. Caribou was sunk by a German U Boat, while en route to Newfoundland from North Sydney.

Caribou was twenty feet 6m long, with the sides covered by narrow wood sheathing painted eggshell blue with maroon trim along the edge of the roof.
The inside was divided into two compartments, the forward one with fixed wooden seats for use by the workmen, was smaller than the rear one.
Caribou was hauled from Weymouth to Riverdale by several yokes of oxen, and was put on the rails and pulled along by Fire Fly for a trial run.
