Mauke is a garden island, extremely verdant and fertile with magnificent hardwood trees in its interior.
Mauke proves to be a pretty little place, some six miles in circumference, "low" in type, but park-like and garden-like and dainty enough to wake covetous desires in the heart of almost any traveller.
Mauke's church, however, is not one of the exceptions, being exceedingly bold and ugly, and it is furthermore disfigured by the most horrible lapse of taste to he seen in almost any island church - the decoration of the pulpit and communion rails with silver dollars nailed on the in rows.

Much oppressed by the warlike Atiuans last century, Mauke was regularly invaded and its inhabitants killed and eaten.
Visitors can stay at either the Mauke Cove Lodge, a guesthouse which is an old coral limestone cottage, or at the Tiare Holiday Cottages which has five studio units with shared bathroom, cooking and tea and coffee facilities.
