He served as a close confidant of the Yongle Emperor of China (reigned 1403–1424), the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
According to his biography in the History of Ming, he was originally named Ma Sanbao (馬 三保), and came from Kunyang (昆阳, present day Jinning (晋宁), Yunnan Province.

Zheng He (鄭和 in pinyin: Zhèng Hé), or Cheng Ho in Wade-Giles, (1371 - 1435), a famous Chinese mariner and explorer, made the voyages collectively referred to as the "Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean" (三保太監下西洋) or "Zheng He to the Western Ocean", from 1405 to 1433.
Zheng He, a eunuch, served as a close confidant of the Yongle Emperor of China (reigned 1403 - 1424), the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
Originally named Ma Sanbao (馬 三保), he came from Yunnan province.

Ma He, as he was originally known, was born in 1371 to a poor ethnic Hui (Chinese Muslims) family inYunnan Province, Southwest China.
Ma accompanied the Duke on a series of successful military campaigns and played a crucial role in the capture of Nanjing, then the capital.
Ma was thus awarded the supreme command of the Imperial Household Agency and, upon his conversion to Buddhism, was given the surname Zheng and the religious name Sanbao (or Three Jewels).

Apart from the name Ma Ha Zhe (Haji Ma in Chinese) engraved on the fading tombstone of Zheng He’s father, there was also the holy Quran that has been safely kept in a glass cabinet in what is now Haji Ma’s family museum.
Writes Time magazine, “He (Ma Sanbao) was tall, dark and handsome — with long earlobes and fierce eyes.” So the general took Ma Sanbao with him to Nanjing, the capital city of Ming Dynasty, where the future admiral became a page to a young prince, known as Zhu Di.
At 13, Ma was castrated and destined to serve the Ming emperial household for life.

Zheng He was born Ma He in 1371 CE in Yunan province to a Muslim family whose family name was “Ma” reflecting the first syllable of Prophet Muhammad’s name.
Both Ma He’s father and grandfather had performed pilgrimage to Makkah, and it is recorded that from a young age he, too, expressed the desire to go on pilgrimage.
During one of the many battles of that time, the young Ma He was abducted, and then castrated by troops of the Ming dynasty, in the service of which he became a eunuch.

Among their many spoils they snatched ten-year-old Ma Sanbao, castrated him, and delivered him to Nanjing as a servant for prince Zhu Di.
Sanbao’s dynamic intellect made him a court favorite and when Zhu Di became Emperor he took the name Yongle and renamed his servant Zheng He (“Three Jewels”).
As admiral, Zheng led seven voyages between 1405 and 1430 to establish diplomatic relations between China and the “barbarous” nations to the west, promote trade, and, incidentally, track down Yongle’s predecessor Jianwen who rumors claimed was still alive.

One of his ancestors Sayidina Syafii alias Suo Feier (his sinicised name) moved from Central Asia to China during the northern Song period where he served the emperor, it is interesting to note that the epithetic titles sayid or sayidina or only reserved for the male descendants of prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.).
Suo Baiyan is Ma Haji's grandfather from his maternal side, and Ma Haji is Ma Sanbao's (Zheng He) father.

The author of the ancient book was Fei Xin, one of the officials who accompanied Admiral Zheng He during his voyages in the early medieval period.
Ma Huan wrote this ancient book three years earlier than the Overall Survey of the Star Raft.

The mention of Zheng He is interesting; we should note that Zheng He's family name was Ma Sanbao, and he was a Chinese Muslim from Yunnan, of the Yi tribal minority.
Louise Levathes' excellent book "When China Ruled the Seas" is highly recommended for anyone with further interest on the voyages of Zheng He.
