  Ma Vlast
Vlast (My Country) is a set of six symphonic poems by the Czech composer Bedrich Smetana.
In these works Smetana combined the symphonic poem form pioneered by Franz Liszt with the ideals of nationalistic music which were current in the late nineteenth century.
The last two poems, Tabor (from 1875) and Blanik (1879), are inspired by history and legends from the Hussite wars.

The recording date in Berlin Classics’ documentation — confined to brief descriptive paragraphs about the music - is given as 1968 but I wonder if it’s not 1967, the last year of Vaclav Neumann’s period as conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and as general music director of the Leipzig Opera.
When he re-recorded Ma Vlast in Prague a few years later — in 1975 with the Czech Philharmonic — he was slightly to rethink the individual tone poems and in every case a process of tightening up occurred.
If you like your Ma Vlast on the distended side, though, maybe eighty minutes with Neumann is time well spent.

Both works are idealogically similar in their glorification of the country and it's people, dictated by the period of their origin.
The last of the six symphonic poems in the Mà Vlast cycle is Blanik, which the composer said begins where the preceding composition, Tàbor, ends.
The symphonic cycle of Mà Vlast is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, strings, harp and percussion.

 Smetana Ma vlast
Smetana completed Ma vlast (or 'My Fatherland') as a celebration of Czech culture and nationhood as it emerged from the grasp of the Austrian Empire at the end of the nineteenth century.
Norrington's interpretation of Ma vlast is taken on period instruments, as was the habit of the now sadly-defunct London Classical Players.
This surprisingly authenticist rendition produces a sense of lightness that Smetana may have recognised and allows us to follow the detailed instrumentation which is too frequently submerged in modern overly-Romantic performances.

Smetana (left) composed this patriotic cycle of six symphonic poems in response to his country's territorial, ethnic, religious, social and economic turmoil during the mid-19th century.
Although the Czech people were officially part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Smetana wanted to unify his people and assert the Czechs' distinct ethnicity and character though his music.
The six symphonic poems that form "Má Vlast" describe Smetana's beloved Bohemia and its people, history, myths and vision of independence.

Smetana - Má Vlast : CD review
I remember the first of the concerts in May on which this recording is based as one of the most exciting events of last season, and the most remarkable achievement of this disc is its successful communication of the palpable danger one sensed in the live performance.
Davis' reading of this score is particularly well-paced, with the right amount of space in the first three movements and a suitable drive for the final three.
The six movements which make up Smetana's Ma vlast depict aspects of 'the Czech spirit', and the work as a whole constitutes the quintessence of nineteenth-century Nationalism in music.

This already-celebrated recording of the complete cycle was made at a very special concert in which a great orchestra and conductor made history: CDs of Má Vlast don’t come better than this.
Kubelík’s fifth recording of the complete Má Vlast cycle marked not only his recovery from a long and serious illness (indeed from virtual retirement) but also his return to his native Czechoslovakia after an absence of more than 40 years.

Classical Notes - Classical Classics - Smetana's Ma Vlast, By Peter Gutmann
It's a rare soul who doesn't respond to his or her national anthem with an involuntary lump in the throat, a quickening of the pulse, watering of the eyes or a supportive symbolic gesture, effects so reflexive to suggest an innate connection between musical spur and chauvinistic pride.
Louis Biancolli deemed it Smetana's artistic manifesto, a vivid tapestry in which compatriots would treasure their glorious history and envision a still nobler future, and outsiders would understand his land and come to love it, too.
Given its symbolic importance in the annals of Czech nationalism, the full cycle, although rarely performed abroad, is an imperative for Czech conductors and ensembles and has been recorded by them dozens of times.

This massive cycle of symphony poems was Smetana’s celebration of the history, mythology and landscapes of his home country of Bohemia, and is recognized as one of the major illustrations of the nationalistic music trend to come out of the Romantic period.
So the impact of the performances are at their maximum, and since the LSO does this on a regular basis they have everything set up and tweaked technically for the best possible pickup.
Creating Ma Vlast was a tremendous challenge for Smetana, because he was fighting the same disastrous deafness which plagued Beethoven.
