Maamme should not be called national anthem, because it is not such.
The 150th anniversary of the Finnish national anthem, Maamme, was celebrated on 13 May with a concert by 800 singers on Kumpula Meadows in Helsinki –; where it was first performed.
First appearing in 1875, the book Maamme was, along with the Bible and the Catechism, one of most influential books in shaping Finnish self- conception at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
The original fresco was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944, but several sketches remain.

Vårt land rapidly won general acceptance as an expression of patriotic sentiment, especially after Paavo Cajander had published his polished Finnish translation (Maamme) towards the end of the 19th century.
Curiously, this song was originally a tongue-in-cheek protest to the Finnish national anthemMaamme, which was composed by the German composer Fredric Pacius to the Swedish words of J.L. Runeberg.
It is a strong contender, along with Sibelius's Finlandia-hymn, in some musical minds, to replace the very foreign Maamme as the national anthem.
