		Due to the primacy of the need to rescue the residents, and due to the limited resources available at the scene, effective measures to extinguish the fire at the “Viljami” home for the senior citizens in Maaninka were not initiated until about one hour and forty-five minutes after the fire began.
		An analysis of the sequence of events has led to the conclusion that no individual measure in the rescue could have altered the course of events so significantly that all of the persons who died in the fire could have been rescued.

		In this pharmacy in Maaninka district, North Savo,the row of medicinal bottles is watched over by a snowy owl.
		The owl was considered to be a bird of omen and a symbol of wisdom, associated with mysterious powers, and was also used in folk medicine.

		Finally, I spent last night in Sillinjarvi and Maaninka, where I saw a number of shorebirds and ducks, 50+ Common Cranes (Kurki), my first Eurasian Coots (Nokikana), and heard a very excited Spotted Crake (Luhtahuitti).
		Shortly after midnight, I could distinctly hear 9 different species singing around one of the local bird lakes!!

		Why, just walking across campus to visit my rats on Wednesday, I was startled by a high-pitched squeal as 8 newly arrived Common Swifts (Tervapääsky) zipped over my head.
		On Tuesday, at a BBQ and sauna outing with some colleagues in Maaninka, I was fortunate enough to catch a Great Bittern (Kaulushaikara) flying past.
		After hearing several, it was nice to put a face with the voice.
