Maariv - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maariv is considered to express the opinion and feeling of the Jewish general public in Israel, and rarely quoted by the foreign press because of the emotional headlines it uses for news events.
The Nimrodi family holds controlling stake in Maariv, and Yaakov Nimrodi serves as its chairman.
Maariv is considered by many israelis as the voice of the Israeli government, vastly criticized for sensationalism, copyright infringements and self censorship.

israelinsider: diplomacy: Appointment of "pro-Palestinian" Greek Orthodox church head postponed
Maariv reported on Thursday that Sharon was pushing to have the government approve Irineos's appointment because the prime minister is under heavy pressure from Likud activists and building contractors with party connections who want access to the vast real estate holdings controlled by the church in west Jerusalem.
Maariv published a letter written by Irineos to PA Chairman Yasser Arafat on June 17, 2001, in which he wrote, "You [Arafat] are aware of the sentiments of disgust and disrespect that all the Holy Sepulchre fathers are feeling for the descendants of the crucifiers of our Lord Jesus...
Irineos was elected by the bishops of the Jerusalem patriarchate in August, 2001, and enthroned on September 15, 2001, as the leader of the oldest and largest church in the Holy Land.

Maariv is/was known as R'SHUT, as opposed to Shacharit and Mincha, which are CHOVA (obligatory).
Note: A woman who decides to daven Maariv should realize that it becomes a vow-like commitment to continue to do so, unless she has in mind B'LI NEDER - that she is NOT undertaking Maariv as an ongoing commitment.
It is important to remember that Maariv is not only one of the thrice-daily davenings - it is also the time we fulfill the mitzva of the evening Sh'ma.

Maariv said Israeli officials had already presented the idea to counterparts in President George W. Bush’s administration.
Maariv said that even before the March 28 general election, Sharon would propose evacuating dozens of West Bank settlements, allowing for the creation of a temporary Palestinian state on a single stretch of land in that territory and in Gaza.

Israelis Find Themselves on Both Sides of the Fence (washingtonpost.com)
Maariv's journalism is not so erudite as Haaretz's, nor so ideological as the small circulation Jerusalem Post.
Maariv, for example, would not likely publish a satiric "Glimpse into the future," written by Hebrew University professor Ephraim Kleiman that appeared in Sunday's Haaretz.
Maariv's less provocative journalistic style runs more to yesterday's sympathetic story about the families of terror victims gathering in The Hague to protest the World Court legal proceedings.

 The Stages of Jewish Mourning
Traditional services are usually held in the morning (Shacharit) and in the late afternoon (Mincha) and evening (Maariv).
Between the Mincha and Maariv services, it is appropriate for someone to share some thoughts from the Torah, in memory of the departed.
It is good to pay a shiva call during these times, because a quorum of people is needed to conduct the service and for the mourners to recite Kaddish.

It is customary to recite the Maariv (evening service) of Shabbos earlier than one usually recites Maariv during the week.
Even those who generally recite Maariv at its proper time, that is, after the appearance of three stars (4), may recite it earlier on Shabbos.
However, since by praying Maariv of Shabbos before sunset, one is fulfilling the Mitzvah of adding from the non-holy to the holy (see note 2) by accepting Shabbos early, the authorities permitted changing one's custom in this case.
