In the year 2004 Universiteit Maastricht was ranked first (of all Dutch Universities) in a research report on quality published by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCandW).

There was a small general discussion, in which the vice president also remarked that besides research and education, the university also needs to take care of the interests of women, disabled and foreign people, as well as terrorism, and that sustainability is just one of these issues from the social sphere.
After delving through the archives of the University, we were surprised to find that so many investigations had been undertaken, but that, since the first talks in 1993, no concrete measures were implemented by the board of the University.
It seemed as if our university had been operating inside a vacuum where no information from the outside world was able to penetrate the regular policy of the UM.
