  Maburaho: First Impression
However, working at the Anime USA convention as a video ops staff member this year, one of my assignments was to sit in the video rooms and make sure nobody stole the equipment.
That also meant I had to watch whatever was playing, and it just so happens one of those titles was Maburaho.
Firstly, here’s the plot: Maburaho takes place in a world just likes ours, save for the fact that everyone is born with the ability to use magic.

Maburaho gets closer to the finale and some of the mystery behind his remaining in ghost form comes to light.
As Maburaho gets closer to its conclusion, some parts of it are becoming clearer and the motivations of various characters start to crystallize as their plans start falling into place.
Maburaho's having fun with the story of Kazuki in ghost form a bit more now that some of the why and how behind it is becoming apparent and those who have plans within plans that nobody else know about are finding it working for and against them at different times.

So now, the scions of Japan's most powerful magical families want in his pants, and to top it all off, he's got a girl living in his dorm claiming to be his promised wife.
There, folks, is the most succinct summary of Maburaho, which might have been easier to swallow if it were a hentai dating sim.
Maburaho is such a by-the-numbers, committee-produced piece of crap that it's just painful to watch.

Maburaho sports helps alleviate the pain a little, the action scenes are surrounded by nonsensical, melodramatic events that only serve one purpose: stall for as long as possible.
Maburaho had focused more on its potentially interesting characters than on its story that was doomed from the beginning, it could have been much more interesting.

Animefringe: May 2005 - Reviews - Maburaho Vol.1: Bewitched and Bewildered
Not having known much about Maburaho when I bought it, besides its noticeable popularity as a fan-sub, I was pretty much expecting a standard, slightly entertaining harem with a flimsy attempt at adding a magical twist.
In the world of Maburaho, a magician can only use magic a set number of times before he or she turns into dust, and unlike most, whose average is in the thousands, Kazuki can use his magic a mere eight times.
Maburaho should really be called an action harem, as much of the show so far is the girls battling with magic over Kazuki.

Maburaho was Toshihiko Tsukiji's first attempt at writing a romantic school comedy.
Maburaho is set in a world where every character has the ability to use magic, however everyone's magic is not equal.
Many critics comment that Maburaho was a typical "by the book" harem comedy that added little originality to the genre.

DVD Talk Review: Maburaho Vol. 1: Bewitched and Bewildered
"Maburaho" doesn't mean anything in Japanese, but is actually a mish-mash of the words "magic" and "love." So a loose interpretation would be "Love in Magic," which is really the best way to describe this show.
I mean, Maburaho is a 24 episode series, but at the rate of 4 episodes a disc, it will cost $180 to own the whole series, that is at least until they put it out in an "Essential" set or a "Complete" boxed set.
These first four episodes weren't bad, but for a show where the premise is that a very powerful character can only use his abilities eight times before he dies, he has already used his powers 3 times before the end of the first disc.

In seeing the trailers and the cover art for the series, and not really knowing anything about it, I was really dreading going into Maburaho as it screamed that it was just another harem comedy.
The genre has fallen on such hard times and overexposure that there either needs to be something radically new or creative done to revive it so it can be exploited all over again.
Maburaho manages to take the traditional harem format and works within most of the usual confines of it but also breaks free from some of it, at least so far, and mixes in some nice little twists with the magic and its social and power issues.

Despite being descended from a family of sorcerers with powerful DNA, 17-year-old Kazuki Shikimori is a clumsy, mediocre conjurer with little luck in both the magical and romantic arts--in fact, he will only be able to use magic eight times in his entire life.
Fortunately for the bumbling teen, his family connections have earned his way into the prestigious Aoi Academy of witchcraft, where he finds himself the object of desire for a trio of teenage witches vying for his enchanted genetic makeup: the sexy modern girl Kuriko; the traditional-minded Rin; and the sweetly innocent Yuna.
Based on a manga by Miki Miyashita, MABURAHO chronicles the girls' rivalry with comedy, romance, magical action sequences--and scads of sexual innuendo and scantily-clad females.

The concept behind Maburaho is simple: Maburaho is about a rather boring, untalented, and loser-is guy that only has one thing going for him.
