 Mac OS X 10.1 - A Road Test - OSNews.com
OS News' review of Mac OS X last week certainly stirred up controversy, partially because some die hard Mac fans perceived that it was improper for an outsider (someone who is not an everyday Mac user) to me making broad criticisms after only a superficial introduction to the New operating system.
By the time Mac OS 8.6 had come out, it had reached a level of utility and stability that was really remarkable considering its humble heritage, but we all knew it was time for something new.
I started OS News in 1997 primarily because of the excitement that I felt for Rhapsody, the code name for the OS X project.

Mac OS X 10.0 also provided all the standard features of a modern operating system — protected memory so programs couldn't corrupt each others' data, preemptive multitasking so programs couldn't hog the processor or lock the entire computer up, device drivers that would be loaded or unloaded as needed, and so on.
Mac OS 10.1 was released less than a year after 10.0, and incorporated a lot of performance improvements, especially on G3 Macs.
Mac OS 10.2 — interestingly, it's often referred to by its code name of "Jaguar" more than it is by its version number — added a lot of new features.

Nonetheless, some of Apple's decisions were highly dubious from a user interface perspective (such as Mac OS X's confused approach to window layering), and no matter what, when it comes to user interface, being different purely for the sake of being different is a mistake because familiarity is an important aspect of any interface.
Aggravating the situation are side-effects of the way Mac OS X was designed; for instance, the fact that it's a multiple user system results in confusing privileges errors when a file that can't be deleted by the current user ends up in the Trash.
Mac OS X has eliminated those hooks into the operating system in favor of stability, and while the stability is appreciated, it's sad to lose the flexibility.
