This Is Where I Came In: The Song Cycles of Jimmy Webb - Article - Stylus Magazine
The park itself was the now-infamous LA locale that Webb and his girlfriend would often visit during lunch, walking around the lake—doing, as he later recalled, “what boys and girls do.” Though many visiting the spot have found it unremarkable in years since, Webb remembers otherwise: "It was beautiful," he insisted to writer Paul Zollo.
A veritable poison-pen diary entry, the song is Webb at his most hateful and venomous, as he watches her walking down the aisle “whitely as though she really was a virgin,” presumably peering from the back row.

MacArthur Park: What's It All About, Jimmy
The song has been ridiculed as classic '60s excess because of the overblown orchestra of the original version and the song's strange lyric--that troublesome metaphor of the cake in the rain, etc. Columnist Dave Barry named it the worst song in history, or something like that, a few years ago.
Songwriter Jimmy Webb says he realizes that his song "MacArthur Park" -- which was a No 2 hit for actor Richard Harris back in 1968 -- is one of those songs that you either love or hate -- and admits that some of the lyrics even make HIM cringe.

Macarthur Park is full of such images--of a woman kneeling in the park, of the cacophony of others around, of a memory being pressed in a book like a flower from decades ago.
This is an incredible song and if you can resist the urge to sing along then there's something wrong with you!Anybody who had the great fortune to see Richard Harris perform this song live, wouldn't bother to try and understand the lyrics but just to open up and let the emotions flow.

Probably most people, if asked what this song is about, would say something like: it's this guy who's left his girlfriend, and as he's driving along he's thinking of her and her reactions.
And finally, the song becomes a triumph - because all of its excesses, therefore, are narrative: they're part of what the song's about, not incidental details of arrangement or poor choices in interpretation.

James William Hindle: Prospect Park: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Woozily romantic, slighly soggy and by all indications dedicated to the members of the author's immediate family, "Prospect Park" is the definition of innocuousness.
Picking things up halfway through the album, the song is fast by Hindle's languid standards, as well as surprisingly R.E.M.-ish-- although it has to overcome a monumentally dorky title and a couple of mewling licks toward the end, the kind Peter Buck wouldn't be caught dead with.
And if you think he's irrepairably fixated on Park Slope, take solace in a song called "Hoboken": perhaps his next CD-length ode to the patterns of yuppie migration is already in the works.
