TAMPA, Florida - Security was tightened Thursday at MacDill Air Force Base, home of key command centers in the U.S. war on terrorism, after two teens in a stolen car drove through a security checkpoint and were later arrested.
The car sped away and was spotted later moving at high speed across town until it ran through one of the gates at MacDill.
MacDill houses both the U.S. Central Command, which oversees forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and U.S. Special Operations Command, the coordination center for elite military units such as the Green Berets and Navy SEALS.

Originally known as Southeast Air Base, MacDill AFB started in 1941 as a training base for B-17 crews, and Pearl Harbor was responsible for it becoming one of the main staging areas for Army Air Corps flight crews and aircraft heading to the Far East.
From 1979 to 1993, MacDill AFB trained almost half of all USAF F-16 pilots, but, with the decision to close the base, all flying operations were cancelled by 1993, and its fighters were transferred to Luke AFB, Arizona.
