TAMPA, Fla. — MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., security personnel did not forcibly stop a stolen car from racing through an entry gate because they didn’t believe the vehicle presented a significant threat, officials have concluded.
However, after a weeklong investigation that concluded Friday, the military acknowledged the two Air Force guards did not know the teenage occupants of the car or what else might have been inside the vehicle when it crashed through a gate and into the 5,800-acre complex in the early morning hours of Sept. 20.
A police dispatcher phoned the base to alert the MacDill security squadron because police and the base do not share a radio frequency, but by the time guards were alerted, the car was already on the base.
