Mac OS X is built on Darwin, an open source Unix-like environment which is based on the BSD source tree, and the Mach microkernel.
Mac OS X v10.2 was never officially referred to as Jaguar in the United Kingdom due to an agreement with the automobile manufacturer Jaguar, although boxes and CDs still bore the Jaguar-skin logo.
Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard" was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 6, 2005, due to be released at the end of 2006 or early 2007, roughly around the same time Microsoft would release Windows Vista (formerly known by the code-name "Longhorn").

The introduction of Mac OS X on March 24th, 2001 was the fulfillment of a promise made over a decade earlier--a promsise to Mac users that they would get a brand new operating system, and that it would be insanely great.
This was partially due to the sluggish performance of the OS X interface on my G3/400 (a problem in its own right), but it was also because I could not set up the OS X user interface to suit my needs the way Mac OS 9 did.

MacOS X is a huge product, and it’s not particularly unusual that problems abound in this, the first release.
That means it’s impossible for MacOS X to talk to a machine running an older version of Personal Filesharing, or to a machine which has filesharing turned on but filesharing over IP (MacOS 9 or certain versions of AppleShare) turned off.

When installing software under MacOS X, however, don't install it as a "plain-jane" user, because that will cause all manner of problems for other "plain-jane" users on the system as well (they may not be able to run the programs, for example).

This is the oldest Fortran compiler available for OS X. Its been around since OS X was in a public beta state.
They are included on a separate CD in the retail version of OS X and also available as a free download from Apple's Developer Site.

Otherwise the installer will be confused, and later on, even if installation went OK, the MacOS X session won't terminate entering an infinite loop trying to access the external disks.
MacOS X does not support SysV style dynamic loading facility like dlopen, etc., though the source package of cctools contains a wrapper for SysV compatibility.
The reason why my custom kernel didn't work turned out to be that my MacOS X partition exceeded the 8GB boundary: this was actually a FAQ :-(I didn't notice this because I could install MacOS X into the partition.
