Macadam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Macadam is a type of road construction pioneered by John Loudon McAdam in the early 1800s.
This problem was later rectified by spraying tar on the surface thus creating tar-bound macadam, or tarmac.
This may have led to the common misuse of the word macadam to refer to a road made with asphalt concrete.

Macadam - road building in America!
Macadam consists basically of compacted layers of small stones cemented into a hard surface by means of stone dust and water (water-bound macadam).
In the bituminous macadam pavement, the foundation is macadam, upon which a bituminous material that penetrates at least 2 in (5 cm) into the foundation is poured, forming an impervious binder.
In the bituminous-mixed macadam pavement, a mixture of crushed rock, ground glass and other additives, and bituminous binder is spread over a macadam foundation and rolled into a compact mass.

Larry Torti Paving - Providence Journal 1993
Macadam as McAdam invented it was a bed of large stones, onto which were was laid small stones, held together by fine sand or slag (cinders).
This Old House producer Bruce Irving said macadam was chosen because "it is roughly in keeping with what would have been put down there back earlier in the century." He reported that 10 days after Torti finished the driveway, it was put to the test by a 30-ton drywall delivery truck.
The reason his macadam looks somewhat like gravel is that Torti puts plenty of stones on the top, to make sure all the asphalt is covered - "some of these people have white rugs and marble floors; we have to be careful" - and some of the stones then become loosened.

 John MacAdam Biography
Although macadamization was replaced by more modern techniques in the early 1900s, the name lives on.
He was paid the sum of £5,000 for works done for Turnpike Trusts around Bristol, but a proposal for £5,000 from Parliament as a grant for his expenses was first refused, then cut to £2,000, mainly due to professional jealousy.
Corruption in roadworks was appalling; by his own efficiency, MacAdam exposed the abuse of road tolls by less scrupulous Turnpike Trusts, many of which were run at a deliberate loss despite high toll receipts.

Keith MacAdam, senior member of the group, has been experimenting with weakly-bound atoms for over 25 years.
Using lasers to pump a sodium-atom electron into a highly-excited and weakly-bound state, MacAdam, aided by theorists David Harmin and Michael Cavagnero, has studied the reaction of such atoms to external influences ranging from manipulation with weak electromagnetic fields to collisions with ion and electron beams.
Now students and postdocs in the MacAdam lab are using novel devices called ``Stark Barrels'' and ``Stark Balls'' to orient these weakly-bound atoms arbitrarily with extraordinary precision and control.

high modulus, stiff dense bitumen macadam roadbase, enrobe a module eleve, eme, in road pavement construction
The upper roadbase and basecourse were dense bitumen macadam, this material is less expensive than hot rolled asphalt that has a higher binder content, but still has excellent load spreading ability through the mechanical interlock of the aggregate particles.
It is able to be proved analytically, in the laboratory, that thin layers of roadbase material that contain stiff bitumens, are better able to spread load over the underlying layers because of their increased stiffness.
Even if the binder target was continually met it is still not a lot of binder to "cement" a roadbase together that is designed to be laid in a relatively thin layer and withstand the load of a high number of heavy goods vehicles.
