		Macadam is a type of road construction pioneered by John Loudon McAdam in the early 1800s.
		This problem was later rectified by spraying tar on the surface thus creating tar-bound macadam, or tarmac.
		This may have led to the common misuse of the word macadam to refer to a road made with asphalt concrete.

		In the bituminous-mixed macadam pavement, a mixture of crushed rock, ground glass and other additives, and bituminous binder is spread over a macadam foundation and rolled into a compact mass.

		Macadam as McAdam invented it was a bed of large stones, onto which were was laid small stones, held together by fine sand or slag (cinders).
		This Old House producer Bruce Irving said macadam was chosen because "it is roughly in keeping with what would have been put down there back earlier in the century." He reported that 10 days after Torti finished the driveway, it was put to the test by a 30-ton drywall delivery truck.
		The reason his macadam looks somewhat like gravel is that Torti puts plenty of stones on the top, to make sure all the asphalt is covered - "some of these people have white rugs and marble floors; we have to be careful" - and some of the stones then become loosened.

	John MacAdam Biography
		Although macadamization was replaced by more modern techniques in the early 1900s, the name lives on.
		He was paid the sum of £5,000 for works done for Turnpike Trusts around Bristol, but a proposal for £5,000 from Parliament as a grant for his expenses was first refused, then cut to £2,000, mainly due to professional jealousy.
		Corruption in roadworks was appalling; by his own efficiency, MacAdam exposed the abuse of road tolls by less scrupulous Turnpike Trusts, many of which were run at a deliberate loss despite high toll receipts.

	John Loudon MacAdam
		John MacAdam was born in Ayr in 1756.
		When he was appointed surveyor to the Bristol Turnpike Trust in 1816 he remade the roads under his control with crushed stone bound with gravel on a firm base of large stones.
		As a result of his success, MacAdam was made surveyor-general of metropolitan roads in England.

		John Loudon Macadam was born in Ayr on 21st September 1756 in the house shown opposite.
		It is alleged that one of the first roads to benefit from being "Macadamized" was the Ayr to Maybole road, part of which is still in use today.
		Similarly, Furnace Road in Muirkirk is believed to have been one of Macadam's early experiments in road construction.

		In an August 26th hearing in the case of MACadam Computers vs. Apple Computer, the Santa Clara Superior Court ruled that the Apple reseller could proceed with charges of fraud and negligent misrepresentation against Apple, despite the computer maker's objections.
		The Court ruled that MACadam could proceed with its claims against Apple for unfair competition in its retail division and illegally receiving funds belonging to the resellers.
		The Act is meant to cover all arbitrary and intentional discrimination by a business establishment on the basis of personal characteristics, such as sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, or medical condition, but is not necessarily limited to those characteristics.
