Macaronesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Macaronesia, not to be confused with Micronesia, is a modern collective name for several groups of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean near Europe and North Africa belonging to three countries: Portugal, Spain, and Cape Verde.
The islands of Macaronesia are volcanic in origin, and are thought to be the product of several geologic hotspots.
The jumping spider genus Macaroeris is named after Macaronesia.

Preliminary evidence suggests that adaptive radiation has been an important factor in the evolution of the subgenus within the islands.
Monophyly of the subgeneric sections is not supported, suggesting that phylogenetic studies using additional molecular markers are needed to clarify sectional circumscription.

The distance from the island of Faial (the one located closer to the geographical centre) to Europe is 1480 Kms and 1900 Kms to Newfoundland.
These islands are part of the biogeographical region called Macaronesia, the Azores being the northernmost area.
Since it is a situation that leads to the decay of the forest or even to its extinction, we came to the conclusion that it would be critical that we create the Botanic Garden of Faial, where we would cultivate and reproduce the plants of the Azores, especially those that are considered most at risk.

Title : Dissertation Research: The Role of Hybridization in the Evo lution of Argyranthemum in Macaronesia Abstract : 9902276 Jansen and Goertzen Oceanic islands are ideal natural laboratories for studying evolutionary processes.
Their isolation, environmental variability, and easily determined ages have aided biologists ever since Darwin in unraveling the forces behind evolutionary change.
In addition, the analyses will provide data of relevance to conservation efforts for several rare species and contribute to the understanding of a theoretical process which threatens many organisms in isolated conditions, extinction via hybridization.
