 Macbeth [1971] - Review @ EOFFTV
Though there have been many versions of Shakespeare's Macbeth over the years, only one has ever treated the subject as though it was a horror film, Roman Polanski's extraordinary retelling of the play made in the wake of the horrific murder of his pregnant wife Sharon Tate and several of his friends.
Despite his assertions to the contrary, there can be no doubting that Macbeth was conceived and executed by Polanski purely as an anguished attempt to confront and deal with the atrocities that had changed his life forever.
The shooting of Macbeth was another ordeal for all involved and again Polanski faced dismissal when his money men got jumpy - by January 1971 he was way over budget and well behind schedule and insurance brokers Film Finance pulled the plug, demanding that Playboy fire Polanski.

Macbeth is the bloodiest straight Shakespeare adaptation to have made it to the screen, but it’s also one of the least stagy.
Macbeth takes place is such a savage world, Polanski creates a protagonist who seems less hubristic than in other interpretations.
This gives the movie a chaotic, ill at ease feeling that is unfortunately dissipated by the choice to internalize the characters’ monologues.

Barnes & Noble.com - DVD, Movie, Video: Macbeth, Jon Finch, DVD, Wide Screen
Many have attributed the film’s abundant onscreen violence to the fact that Macbeth was Polanski’s first film after the grisly murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, by the Manson family; and while the mayhem is brutal and plentiful, it's never gratuitous.
Perhaps William Shakespeare meant to have Lady Macbeth perform her sleepwalking scene in the nude -- it was this X-rated scene and the film's much-publicized spurts of violence, rather than the brilliant performances of Jon Finch as Macbeth and Francesca Annis as his Lady, that lured crowds to Roman Polanski's 1972 adaptation of Macbeth.
Macbeth was financed and released by Playboy, which naturally necessitated a fold-out spread on "the witches of Cawdor." The original Shakespearean text was adapted for the screen by Polanski and Kenneth Tynan.

This movie is violent and brutal, sparing the audience none of the blood that's implied in the play and adding some gratuitous nudity to boot.
As Macbeth, morose, dark-eyed Jon Finch is really quite good--and he certainly does have the diction for the role.
All in all, Polanski's "Macbeth" is a decidedly thorny piece of work: since it was his first film following the murder of his pregnant wife Sharon Tate and friends by members of the Charles Manson cult, he seems to have had too much to prove here.
