Less well-known, according to a leading Israeli archaeologist, is that the Maccabees also were major builders who transformed the face of Jerusalem and restored the centrality of the Temple in Jewish life.
The Maccabeans, who founded the Hasmonean dynasty, likely inspired King Herod’s vision of the Temple, said Bahat, whose specialty is Jerusalem of the Second Temple period.
In recent years, the former chief archaeologist of Jerusalem has supervised the excavations of the Western Wall tunnel, the ancient subterranean passage that extends along the western perimeter of the Temple Mount.

According to tradition, when the Maccabeans recaptured the Temple they found only one small jug of consecrated oil, enough to burn the Temple Menorah for one day.
The military victory of the Maccabeans was a great miracle and, of course, a necessary part of God's plan in order to return the Temple to service before the coming of Messiah.
The celebration of Hanukkah is recorded in the New Testament in John 10:22-30 where we read that Jesus walked in the Temple during the "Feast of Dedication", another name for Hanukkah.

What should be understood is the fact that the eight-day period of Chanukah, which brought about the miracle of Chanukah by the Maccabeans, was merely a kind of cosmic guide.
The miracle was not the victory of the Maccabeans over the Greeks or the finding of the undefiled vial of oil.
The Maccabeans knew the importance of transforming the Desire to Receive for the Self Alone to one of Sharing.

Although they existed previous to the Maccabean revolt, they are first mentioned in 1 Maccabees 2:42 - "there united with them [i.e., the Maccabeans] a company of Hasideans, mighty warriors of Israel, every one who offered himself willingly for the law." The Hasidim joined with Judas Maccabeus in revolt of imposed Hellenistic culture.
When religious freedom was won in 163 B.C. the Maccabeans expanded the revolt to secure political freedom from the Seleucid power, but the Hasideans felt they had reached their goal.
This is the central reason for the alliance between the Hasidim and the Hasmonaeans (Maccabeans).

Black and white group photograph of the Maccabeans on their pilgrimage to Palestine, including the author Israel Zangwill.
- Zangwill became a supporter of the Zionist cause, having met Theodor Herzl in 1895, and and one year later attended the rally of the Maccabeans with Herzl, which was in essence the beginning of the British Zionist movement.
Zangwill visited Israel in 1897, and became a vocal advocate of Jewish nationalism which, he argued, could be realized in any area, and not exclusively in the Land of Israel. The 'Order of Ancient Maccabeans' were formed in 1891, devoted to philanthropic and cultural activities among the Jewish community and Zionism.
